Had a Mtec 1 originally on my six. However you will find an E30 M3 mtec 1 wheel is slightly smaller as the E24 shares the Mtec diameter with the 5 series cars that had them. Not that this is a problem as it will give you a slightly better turn in.

What month in 1985 was your M635CSi built, Rohan? If it was built before September 1985 (and some were), then the M-Tech 1 steering wheel should be a coarse-splined one (24 splines, I think). BUT: If built from September 1985 onwards, then you need a fine-splined example (36 splines). They are not interchangeable, unless you know a way of swapping hubs. My knowledge of E30 M3s is minimal, but I get the feeling that all of them may have had fine-splined steering wheels, since they followed the M635CSi onto the market, particularly in the UK. Er, hand on a mo. As Horse says, the splines vary - plus on pre-9/85 cars the steering lock operates on the coloumn shaft and on later cars an E30 style steering lock engages with teeth on the inside of the steering wheel. Put another way - if you can remove the steering wheel (22mm nut) with the kets out of the ignition you have the early sort and no, the later E30 wheel will not fit. A B plate E23/E24/E28 car (UK) will have the early type whereasd most (but not all) C plates have the later E30 wheel. |

Another clue is to look at the (admittedly tiny) datestamp which is cast inside the steering wheel hub. The stamp on my M-Tech 1 steering wheel (which I will be fitting - sorry, Rohan!) appears to say "6/85", so theoretically suitable for my 1983 car. |

Not if it's got the internal teeth for the steering lock it won't. 6/85 could
still be from an E30. |

No sign of any specific internal teeth on mine, Andy. The only thing I can see in the hub are the splines. |

Another simple way to tell the build dates on the car assuming no changes have occoured on the M635 is to check the rear spolier. Pre 9/85 cars had an all rubber spoiler at the rear where as post 9/85 M635's had the rubber and body coloured rear spoiler. If you have the later rear spoiler and it has not been added then the car should be fine.
