I have a 1997 523i. The other day I was on my way home with the wipers on intermittent. Then all of a sudden the passenger blade, when upright, stayed in that position! The drivers side wiper continued to work normally. Has anyone encountered a similar problem?
Any advice would be welcomed. Thanks. Kind regards. SKP.

Yes, and take my advice - don't try forcing it into position (I did, the wiper then flew left and left a series of nasty scratches on my A pillar).

My mechanic did a fix that took about 5 minutes, which he said was a standard way of fixing them on a Rover 800 and lasted a long time.  Unfortunately, I can't remember exactly what he did.

Sorry if this is useless to you.

had a similiar prob on my e34.

It was a prob with the balljoint which attached the wipers to the motor.

on mine you had to remove the plastic trim exposing the motor & mechanism, reposition the balljoint, drill through & Secure with a self tapper.still working like it now & cost nothing to fix.

good luck

YOU SHOCKING BODGER!!!!

The new link rod is well under a tenner from BMW
and takes less time to fit than your 'fix'.

Hang your head in shame!

I've replaced the complete wiper rack on an E34 - it's
not as bad a job as it's reckoned to be although new
ones are about Ł150. The one on my Touring is well
worn with the usual 'clonk clonk clonk' against the
bonnet.

Bloody rubbish! The wiper rack on my '65 Morris
1100 is by comparison as tight as a worm's belt. 40
years old in December!

Drew - for the fault in mine, I was looking at €€€ in the dealers - my guy fixed it with no parts for a tenner!

Ive done the screw fix on my wipers as well, it works and it will last longer than the plastic balljoint on the connecting rod.

Bodgers of the world unite.

to get access to the place where its disjointed itself...remove the passenger side air box and you will see the joint.

I've replaced teh arm and it lasted 4 months...the ball joint on the main wiper mechanism is worn...too expensive to replace...elastic bands your man every 6 months
