I have just bought a 1988 525i to use the engine for a project car that I have laying around. I want to know if there is any major differences between the two cars. One is a 1988 520i 6 Cylinder and the other is a 1988 525i 6 Cyclinder.
Anything to watch out for with regards wiring etc? Cheers |

The two are much the same with the obvious displacment being the biggest difference.
The 520i is a smaller version of the 525i, but all the parts are the same (including engine). Only the ECU and some engine internals will definitley be unusable. |

Is it just as simple as replacing the ECU along with the engine then ?

I think so but wait for some 'more informed' replys before doing it. I think the AFM, throttle body, brakes, suspension, etc are all the same.

Hi Marty, Yeah they are completely interchangeable, i used air flow meter from a 2.5 on my old 520i 12v and it worked fine, rad/mountings/exhaust manifold etc etc all the same so basically its nuts and bolts swap over into the 2.0 and then just plug in the 2.5 ecu, and it should run fine. Is this going into the AC Schnitzerised 520i??? Hope this Helps Ben |

Engine, gearbox(longer), prop(shorter) are different so you will need to
swap these over along with the AFM (they are different) and ECU. Just pull the engine out with the 'box and engine loom. The rads are the same. If the 525i is a manual you can get away with the 520i flywheel, clutch and gearbox. |
