I wouldn't agree there. There are plenty of good sports convertibles that suit men as well as women. The Ford Ka, Mini, VW Beetle, Citroen C3 etc etc are for Girls. But an MX-5, Z3 (with an engine; not this 1.9 rubbish), Z4, S2000, Boxster, 911, Jag, SL, and M3 would and should be considered mens cars. The huge array of family convertibles ala Audi, 3 Series, 6 Series, CLK, VW Eos etc are more of a grey area. I suppose they just show that you're a successful family man, or a married to one. (I know some women may choose to buy one themselves but mostly they would buy the smaller ones if they were single). Convertibles are good fun. Buy one and enjoy it I say. |

Chris Bangle is the absolute genius destroyer of BMW. I think most of the new style is rather odd and it takes genius to do that and increase sales the way BMW have managed. Actually, I don't like the insides anymore either. I love the classic BMW binnacle/dashboard and think back fondly to the E21/E23/E24/E28 etc. days of the angled centre console; those were the days, proper driver orientated design. There was a time when BMW's were bought as a "Driver's Car". Nowadays it's seen as just another prestige/status brand. Larzyh. |

Agreed. There's something rather... unimpressive about the new 'vert with the roof up, and roof down all it reminded me of was my own car...
Doesnt help that I havent seen one in a nice colour yet. What was the deal with BMW producing promo photographs in gold? I think safety regulations and buyer comfort requirements have alot to do with alot of the decidedly dodgy car design these days. Kinda means they all have to look the same, but with different twinkly jewellery bits to nod towards 'styling'. |

I saw one yesterday BTW, looked quite nice with the roof down but I just don't like those folding hard tops. I feel they take up too much bootspace and they make the car look less pretty than a conventional soft top. Edited by 635CSi |

Thats soooo true. Most men certainly don't suit convertibles. I don't suit mine. As Clarkson said, the disadvantage with a convertible is that everyone can see you're a fat, middle-aged, scruffy, ugly fella with a bald patch. Fortunately, I have a full head of hair. The rest, well I plead guilty.

Problem is that (IMHO) most men don't suit convertables. Now sports-cars are different - when I had one, the hood was ALWAYS down - Especially when it was raining |

Sounds frustraing all right Coasting. Even BMW motorbikes are supposed to
have awkward indicators. There's a girl that lives up the road from me who owns a Mini convertible and NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER puts the hood down. Drives me mental. Especially when you're stuck in a melting hot car with no aircon. I know some owners seem too embarrassed to put the hood down. Like they're trying to show off or something. But I always put the hood down when I had the Z3. Even when it was 1 degree outside. Just so long as it's not raining. Anyway, sorry for the thrread hijack. I do like Bangles convertibles though. Wonder what the new tin top 3 series will be like? |

Yup, you just tap them. A quick tap and it'll do a 3-flash indication and automatically disengage. A bigger tap it'll do a full indication. It then disengages when you straighten up. BUT We all know we sometimes don't want to wait for that. So, in a normal car you'd flick the indicator in the opposite direction. Not in this. You flick it in the same direction you did to indicate. Cos the digital side of it is the toggle flick. Like 0/1, binary b****x, on and off etc. After 20 months I still can't get used to that. For a full year I indicated in both directions whenever I went to make a turn. I've just about got the hang of it now, but it was only a few weeks ago when I rushed an indication that I messed it up and indicated in both directions again. It just isn't the way it should be in my opinion! I got 40 minutes of hood down action today. Oddly enough I saw an MX-5 with its hood up, which I find unusual as they're usually a hardcore bunch. I always see this same car with the hood up though - no matter what the weather. Very odd. I also saw a couple of A4 Cabs with their hoods down, a Saab Convertible and a very attractive blonde in a 206CC. Female, that is. |

Digital indicators? Explain for us poverty stricken sods with old cars. Is it like
other new cars that flash 3 times when you only want it to flash once to change lanes etc? (stupid idea IMO) Glad to see you got a good deal on your 645 and that you're enjoying the sunshine. The amount of convertibles I passed today with their roofs up was criminal. I'm really missing my old Z3 right now. I'm considering buying an old MX-5 if I can find a good cheap one. (maybe even an MGF and put up with the problems) |

Hey, stop it, with all this love I'm getting worried. There is one major drawback to owning the car. Its common with all new BMW's. Those damned digital indicators. I hate them with a passion. |

I agree with Eamo - couple of the best posts in a while Coasting. Lots of nitty gritty detail, and very interesting too.

The 650Ci Sport is a possibility, but I've very little reason to change to one right now. If I did, it'd be changing for changing sake. There is an interesting excercise in depreciation with the 645 too. Rule of thumb and pub comment would be to say people expect the 6 to depreciate like a stone. Indeed I pretty much subscribed to that train of thought when I bought one. However, when I have looked around out of interest and little more, I have been very pleasantly surprised. Even Glasses Guide and below guide price was somewhat surprising. See, it is of course all relative. If you talk pound notes then it sounds like a huge loss. However, if you talk percentage terms, which is the only real thing to do when talking about depreciation and the initial cash outlay, then the figures stack up surprisingly well. People have a habit of comparing a PX or trade price to a list price and saying "Holy wotsit, thats a big loss." However... 62,225 or thereabouts was the list price with all the options (its pretty much fully loaded). The price I paid was actually 55k. Then, after getting to that price I used the installation of a top-end Tracker and 3 years free servicing to close the deal. So I went away happy. So in 20 months the car has cost me...nothing to service. Nor will it within 36 months. Then, if I were to trade it in now, and this would depend on what it was put up against, then I'd be looking at anywhere between 38,500 and 44,000. Thats pretty irrelevant as the balance to change is all that matters, but I've given the figures to demonstrate a point. So lets take the very bottom figure of that. The least trade-in price I could expect to get on it. 38,500. That would indicate I'd have lost 16,500 on the car in 20 months. However..that means, presently, that the car is worth 70% of the price I paid for it. After almost 2 years (and it'll not change much, if at all, over the summer months as the car recently went up in Glasses and is holding pretty much each month). So if that trend were to continue, and if the figures were to slide even dramatically in late 2007/early 2008...by my worst calculations if I had it went it hit 3 years old (which is very unlikely) then I'd have a car that was worth 55% of its initial value. Now look at other brands and models. Thats a very good figure indeed, would actually better the prices being realised by 3 year old E46 M3's right now! I'd never had thought that, not in a month of Sundays. By the way, yes I accept the fact that the Coupe, for whatever reason, doesn't seem to have held as well as the Convertible. Its about 3-4% behind for some strange reason. Anyway, the sun is out and its a belter of a day here, so sod it - I'm off out for some hood down joy. Edited by Coasting |

The GL isn't actually a direct replacement AFAIK, the G Wagen is supposed to continue production in left hand drive markets for another few years. I've seen the GL, I hated it at first but like Bangle BMWs it has grown on me! I sat in a Freelander II, I've still to drive one though, how did you find the drive? The cabin was very nice indeed but very Ford but that doesn't bother me. It's based on the new Mondeo platform and if I was the market for a compact SUV it would definitely be my choice. I very much doubt I will ever buy an SUV though. Edited by 635CSi |

@635CSi, there's a new G wagon out now. Well it's a GL. Had a go in a new
Freelander on Monday. It's only okay. and you'd have to spend a fortune to get decent spec. I wouldn't buy it or an X3 though. @Coasting; I'd say you local BMW salesman is really missing you. How much has that 645 cost him in lost commision. Glad you like the car though. Are you going to buy another one just to keep it fresh or will you have to go for something different? Man I wish I had your problems. |

Yes but you would never tell it, it is as poor as one of those bargain basement Korean offerings. It is cheap feeling, it has virtually no offroad ability whatsoever and it is about 20 grand too expensive! BMW must have no respect for it's customers anymore by launching the X3, they've priced it out of the segment too. Anyone who chooses one over a Freelander II is either wrong in the head or know's nothing about cars. |
