If you are putting on the 540 front and rear callipers you will require the 750 master cylinder. If you don't fit it you will loose about 15% pedal travel as the 540 set up has larger bore in the callipers. I would highly recomend doing this otherwise your pedal will be on the floor. Also you should also consider the braided hoses this will sharpen up the pedal considerable. If you go with this set up you will have some unbelievable brakes. It's the set up i have on my six. Thanks James for all the info: re: brake upgrades. Have decided on the E34 450 front & rears. Am still undecided on the Master Cylinder upgrade as I gather that it is only really a desirability if one is doing trackwork or an awful lot of high speed braking? Incidentally if anyone is interested Kent BMW Spares in Charing (01233 713447) have a set of 4-Pot Brembo Calipers w/Discs for £120.00.

Front Options E31 850csi 345x32 4 pot Brembo E31 840 is a front only conversion 324x30mm 4 pot brembo's post 1993 E31 850 fronts pre 1993 315x30mm single pot callipers e34 M5 3.8 (Late) Fronts 345x32 4 pot Brembo callipers E34 M5 3.6/3.8 (early) Fronts 315x28mm single pot E34 540 E32 750 302x28mm single pots E34 520 -535 302x25mm single pot E28/E24 M5/M6 300x28mm 4 pots E28/E24 other models 286x22mm single pots Rear Options E34 540/M5 rears are the best you can do here. 300 x 20mm vented. E34 520 - 535 300x10mm single pots solid E28/E24 all models 280x10mm single pot solid Above are the available options. I have had the 4 pot brembos and the 750/540 on my car. Unless you are racing the single pot 750 are very good. My set up includes a 750 master cylinder. The750/540 fronts with 540/m5 set up at the rear. Standard BMW stamped Discs and pads all round and braided hoses. The car has the same braking performance now as our 1999 528 which has superb brakes. Yes the 4 pot Brembos are even better but you need 17" rims for these and they will be hard to find and costly to buy. You will be looking to pay at least £350 for a pair of these and the first pair i bought had been cracked so i sent them back as you are usually buying them from an accident damaged car. Also slow speed 5mph braking has a slight delay as there is a bit of pad slop with the 4 pots. If you want more information or live in the surrey area i can take you out and show you what they are like. Send me a PM James |

Am contemplating a Brake Upgrade. I know of the E32 750 Front brake/E34 540 Rear way to go. However I also understand that the E31 840 is also an option as a donor. What is not clear to me is whether one utilises both front and rear Calipers/Rotors if taking this route. Anyone ready to advise??
