For snow you want the narrowest tyres that you can fit(so they can cut through the snow) with a good chunky tread pattern. The modern M+S tyres are a good compromise between snow and normal conditions.

On my E34 I run 225's. I assume the tyre width is
more important for traction, so the wider the tyre the bigger the footprint. I keep a set of snow-chains in my boot and when fitted the grip I get is excellent. The last two winters have brought some quite heavy snow here and without the chains I couldn't get to work etc. It's great being able to drive up hills when other cars are stuck at the bottom! Cheers, Shaun |

I'm looking to do exactly the same thing. I think post 2000 cars will only take a 16" rim as a minimum (but don't quote me on this) so a set of turbines or similar may be ideal. As for getting a set for a good price it's unlikely as most I see on ebay are being sold for £150 ish plus postage. If you manage to get a set of 16's I think the ideal size would be 225/55's. For winter tyres I find www.mytyres.co.uk unbeatable. As I can't find a set of 16's I think I'm just going to chuck a set of 235/45's winters on the rear of my 17's then look for a set of 18's or 19's to have as my summer wheels . |

I've been looking at the long range forecasts suggesting a harsh winter in the UK. Our 2001 family 520 (2.2) touring has got 17" wheels and Goodyear F1's. Great in the summer, but not so good in snow, ice and freezing tarmac. What are the reccomended winter tyre sizes? Where should I look for some suitable good used BMW wheels to suit? I'm guessing these whould be either 15" or 16". thanks SS7 |
