Met my parents here in Munich yesterday. I drove from Ireland via Rome, they came down from Copenhagen.

My Dad says "I saw this strange looking thing on the way down"; was the X6; he doesn't like it either!

The point of many car owners is to stick their two fingersup to the world... CL63, Veyron, Bentley etc...
In fact, the X6 is just a "cheapo" attempt!

I know people who wouldn't have them, but not for environmental concerns... An X6 would not say "F-Off" quite loudly enough... ;)

I spotted a new shape Citroen C5 on the way to work this morning - had to take a second look to check it wasn't an X6 - rear quarter profile is not dissimilar.

Loads around already.  Mrs D spotted one on a journey recently, knew it was a BMW but not sure what model.  Normally fairly easy going about cars, likes a nice shape, not generally too vocal about those that don't appeal.  She was very clear about her view of the shape - instant dislike.

A thought struck me while reading a piece about them in Autocar recently, if BMW are so sure that the SUV coupe is a new niche market, why not go with the courage of their convictions and make it a 3 door?

Now: BMW 523i SE '00, 318i SE - e91 '07, 325i Coupe '93.

Prev:
e46 328i SE Touring, 330Ci, 318Ci.
e39 523i SE.
e36 325i Coupe *2, 323i SE, 316iSE.
e30 325iSE 2dr, 320i Conv, 320i 2dr, 316i.

I personally love it.
I think the shape is very aggresive and so original.
Remember guys when new 5 series and 7 series came out a couple of years, many of us could not stand them, but we got used to, and they look pretty nice now. Especially the facelift ones.

And the X6 50i has a serious banger.

I had seen more of these monstrosities in Ireland than in the last ten days of travelling around France, Italy and Austria (in fact I can only recall seeing two!). Maybe petrol prices of 1.65 a liter has something to do with it; paid 101 euro to fill my E46 in France (at least my conservative driving on the motorways yields 550 miles to a tank).

Heading to Munich tomorrow, maybe there will be some there!

2 Different X6s spotted going through Oughterard Co Galway in recent
weeks. The rear looks really really high. Both were red cars.

Re. Top Gear - I enjoy to progamme while frequently disagreeing. In fairness, the item on the X6 was in relation to the "Cool Wall" and there are a number of other cars in the Un-cool sections that I wouldn't mind having. And the M3 was only recently promoted out ot the Un-cool category.

I am surprised how many X6's I've seen recently (maybe the Mid-west is the happening place), despite the supposed downturn in our economy. The order books are apparently also full!

Autocar have, and the report was quite positive (assuming you start out on the basis that SUV/SAV is desirable!) but acknowledged the issue of looks.  Dynamically, things seemed positive.

I've seen a good few on the road so far and two thoughts strike me:

  • if they feel its brave to try and cross the SAV and coupe concepts, then why not be really brave and make it a 3 door?
  • it would actually look better if it was lowered.  I'm guessing that's where Alpina, etc. will focus their attention visually but it would kind of defeat the purpose of the SAV.

I had an opportunity to park my Touring next to an X6 in the Herbert Park underground; I didn't, afraid it would eat my E46!

In hindsight I should have and taken a picture, just to show the size difference (and both were Sapphire Black; would have made a good picture).

The 135i would be a laugh!
Little Car + Big Engine =

They didn't have many nice things to say about the X6 on Top Gear last night. We have an old trooper here at the moment and it's great for towing and getting out of muddy fields. I also had a 2.6 petrol Pajero in Oz - wouldn't have seen half as much of the country if I didn't have it. But here... for the average road user... I just don't see the point.

I suppose it's a case of whatever floats your boat!

we'll see more on them on the road than the 135i because the X6 is a more obvious status symbol; I'd rather have the 135i...

Driven the Q7 and it's a very nice place to be - although it feels like you're towing a trailer as the back end seems to roll over very suddenly when cornering at any pace. X5 it really only percieved as a posh kiddie runabout - from anybody I know. I have seen the X6 around Killaloe in Clare - a challenging look to say the least, I reckon we'll see a lot more of them on the road than 135i's.

Well bmw1066 you are entitled to your opinion and so is everyone else.  Whether the product is commerically viable or not, doesn't preclude people from having a view on it.

Ivan, I detest the Q7, it's just a big, bland barge!  The X5 is a well designed and detailed product.  I do not think that the X7 would do very well, though I'm sure in the US it might.

Saw one on Aston Quay a couple of days back. Black 08D. Gotta say, sitting amongst the ordinary traffic it looked the dogs gonads. I'd have one in a flash if I didn't fancy the pants off the Q7.

Killian, I think BMW would be insane to make the X7. Give it a couple of years and fuel may well be £5 a litre, never mind gallon. On top of this more and more people are turning against 4x4s. Like it or not more people belive in global warming than don't and this balance is only moving in one direction.

I agree with Peter - it's niche marketing gone mad.  Pointless when the X5 is so damn good.

One passed me today.  It looks - to my eyes - utterly hideous.  The rear of it look totally wonky.  It's like a tonka truck I had a a child = regular sized body and huge wheels.  I would much prefer an X5.
