Yes there is one cos I was $h!tt!ng myself when I changed the battery on my E39 incase I bumped it and set it off with my head and hands in close proximity to it!

I was going to say IBS, inteligent battery sensor which the E60 is afflicted with but I'm not sure if the E39 was ever fitted one.

Put it down to another one of those E39 weird electrical gremlins that make your life a misery for an hour then sort themselves out never to re-appear.

I doubt that it was the fuses as otherwise something would have worked. I'm sticking with the battery terminals.

I once had this with a company laguna, it was a similar fix to what the guys describe, apart from it was a new battery, it was a bad cell connection inside.
Best Wishes

Mine did the same thing (2003 E39 530d)when i was at Bexley motors, luckily Nigel had probably seen it before and he secured the battery connection and off it went.

Seems the battery posts can be a problem.

I'm with Kilian on this and guess it is either the battery terminals or the main fuse in the thick red cable going from the battery.

If the alarm/ews was to blame then the red light would have flashed. If you have an indy you go to you could check for fault codes but my guess is that there wont be any.

no kbannon the blessed thing started up so rather than wait nearly an hour for him, i rang and cancelled. went to work this morning and it was fine, altho the clock was out by about 12 mins really weird, its got me a touch worried.
do you think that it would be worth getting it on a diagnostic machine?

hi i own an e39 525d  on an 02 plate.i went to asda tonight, uneventful journey nothing out of the ordinary went in the shop ,came out 20 mins later, opened car  everything was ok put key in the ignition and nothing happened! and i mean nothing, not a single light came on not even the red flashing one on the mirror, absolutely nothing.i tried getting out and locking, then unlocking but not even that was working no lights,no anythiong it just sat there dead.couldnt get in the boot even using the key manually...nothing.after 10 mins i opened the bonnet and being useless didnt have a clue what to look for everything seemed ok so i shut the bonnet and rang the AA. i gave it another couple of minutes and tried it again and hey presto it started up as if nothing was up with it. do any of you clever people know what could have happened? and im worried that it may happen again. your thoughts would be very much appreciated
