So far, my new trackday car has cost me almost
120 - I'm gutted. A 1988 F 320i 4 door bought from Ebay for 122, knackered front seat, small ding in the wing by the headlamp, another bigger dent in the front panel, front spoiler lip missing. BUT; a working on board computer which I sold for 85 and a set of clean BBS cross spokes. I put this 85 towards buying a new cambelt and tensioner, water pump, anti freeze, 5 litres of magnatec and a new oil filter. Suspension? The complete set up from an Alpina C1 2.3 which was rebuilt 2 years ago with new shocks and some very low Jamex springs - free of charge, all I had to do was take it off the car because said Alpina is having a rebuild with brand new everything. Front seats replaced with a pair of Recaros from a 325i, again, free of charge. Black seats in a beige interior - who cares?? Momo steering wheel which I've had for years. Things to do; racing brake fluid, Goodrich front and rear hoses (given to me but not used until now....) and the solid rear axle beam bush conversion which involves a big cup washer and a rubber exhaust ring each side. Got an ECU chip from ChippedUK which should be pretty good. And that's about it. I reckon I'm on the way to doing the whole thing for 200 - all my own efforts of course plus some quality scrounging but an antidote to all the 15'000 M3's. Can anyone beat that? |

Oh, plus 325i front (20mm) and rear (14.5mm) anti
roll bars. The stock 320i only has a front bar and it's 18.5mm. Hopefully it'll be off to the 'Ring in April or May for some 12 minute laps! |

Hi Andy, I have an E30 325 (daily driver) and gave it its first track day outing in Oct last year and it was an absolute scream. Save for losing the centre caps from the alloys and trashing four perfectly good tyres the car out performed my expectations by a mile! There were plaenty more expensive toys around but non had such a laugh or spent as much time on the track, we clocked up approx 225 track miles and then drove home - fantastic. Let me know how you get on at the Ring. |

My best result was a 1985 518i bought for 20 from
Southampton car auction with a dodgy cluth (it was just a leaky slave cylinder). I did a full day at Castle Combe with it in 2002, ran it out of water twice (dribble from a bottom hose clip), drove it about 200 miles home and sold it for 175. You've never heard tyre squeal on this level. Last year I bought a 40 316 4dr and ragged the t*ts off it at Rockingham, unbelievable fun and for so little cash. I had people interviewing me. At the same time I had a black Sport Evo that was so mint I was scared to use it which defeats the object of having a decent car but so be it....... |

Our Chris' E21 came to us free of charge from another student whose Mother wanted it off the drive.
On the outside it looks like any other tired old 316.. but Our Chris has fettled it and it is suspended on a nice little Leda coilover setup that was on the championship winning car a couple of seasons back. The 'Big Brakes' will be cobbled together from 323 rotors fitted with Volvo 4 pots. The engine is standard M10.. but if we can get a Ti manifold and I borrow the webbers off the Westfield then we should have a healthy 140bhp.. or if we cam it up we should get 175.. and there was the correct cam on ebay unsold for 60. And as for your black Recaros in a beige car.. we have got the sports seats out of a 535 and all we need to do is fit a tilt mechanism out of the old seats. The only real expense is going to be tyres.. but the car came with nice wide Mahles which are only 13" and there are bags of cheap competiton rubber to fit Caterhams and Westys that will do nicely. Hopefully we should be able to suprise a few punters at Croft! |

It's been suggested that I weld the diff up to create
an NSD (no slip diff) but that sounds a bit savage! The 320i is booked up for Croft, assuming it lives long enough. If it doesn't I'll be up the auctions on the Friday before buying something else. Anyone tracked a Renault 25 perchance? Or a G reg Senator Auto.... |

I don't have such good luck with my track day weapons. But I did find these photos, which raised a smile...

I believe some Porsches ran on track with a solid diff.. and at the other end of the spectrum I know a clubman that rallies with a welded up diff and it works for him

Well, with 90 bhp and 175 Kwik Fit remoulds you've
got to be a bit dramatic. With a 316, the only speed is flat out, everywhere |

Well believe it or not, the rubber lasted pretty well. I
think they might have been radials as opposed to 'moulds but they were what we call 'plastic taxi tyres', i.e as tough as old nails and a complete bitch in the wet. It was pretty grim in the dry as well, with chronic understeer that you could only cancel out by getting the thing sideways. Cheap tyres are horrible. |
