Hi All, Just wonder if anyone has any experience of this problem: My 1994 E34 525i SE, manual-obviously :-) has developed a bit of clutch judder but only from time to time (its fine 98% of the time) It seems to be at its worst say after a motorway trip, however its not immediate. Heres an example of when it occurs: I drove the 50 miles from my work to Manchester, mostly on Motorways at a "good" cruising speed. Came off the motorway, drove into Stockport, all was fine. Stopped at a filling station, filled up and ate a sandwich (time about 10mins) On setting from a standing start (especially uphill & reversing) the clutch judder is very apparent. After parking the car up for 30 mins or so, all is fine again. My suspicion is that I may be missing or have a damaged catalyst/exsaust heat shield which is either a causing a gearbox/prop mounting to go soft, or the clutch fluid's getting hot? It also seems to get worse with the occurence of hot weather Any suggestiions would be very welcome!! Also does anyone know the maximum width wheel that you can get in the rear arches of the E34. I'm looking to put 16 x 7.5J (Off set IS20) on the front, 16 x 9.5J (Off set IS15) on the rear?

Could be the clutch plate orThrust bearing showing signs of wear. usually after about 80k miles?

Sorry, no suggestions but, I had a similar problem with my 1990 525, the car was fine on long journeys, well short ones as well really, but stop/start traffic queues in warm weather was the problem. I think you are right to suspect heat as the biggest factor.

I had similar problems with my 525D, it happened mainly in stop start traffic when the clutch gets really hot, I believe it is down to the friction material used nowadays not using asbestos & being slightly more heat sensitive. Regds Ian |
