Topic: de-chrome Posted: 29-August-2005 at 19:12 |
does anyone know how best to de-chrome a motor? can the replacement parts be found or will the existing chrome strips need to be painted?
also, if they need to be painted, is it best to leave them on the car or can they be removed easily enough?

I left mine on the car this time as when I tried to dechrome me old E30
I found the trims had a tendency to bend (bent my original trim, the
trim of 2 cars in the scrappy before removing the 3rd without problem).
I used wirewool to get the shine off, then cleaned the trim with
thinners. Primer it first (don't just spray the black paint on) - I
used 3 coats of Satin Black paint, and then a couple of coats of laquer
to finish it off. And, if you decide to leave the trim on the car you
will need a never-ending supply of newspaper & packaging tape
It does look alot better though and the finish is faultless:
HTH

John
