Your opinions guys 4 prong bosch spark plugs or 1 prong champion spark plugs does it make a difference which ones. let me know. |

In an E30 320i, tried the 4 prong ones - engine ran rough, put in standard plugs - engine ran fine.
![]() I stick with standard plugs, it's what is recomended by the manufacturer (who has spent millions in developing the engine in the first place) |

Better fuel consumption, wouldn't know about what plugs to put in - I have tried the 4 prong jobbies and wasn't impressed. Also have you noticd that plugs always come in boxes of 4, bit of a pain if you have a 6 - then again you then have 2 spare
![]() Could try chipping/mapping? feathering the throttle when traveling at speed. I managed to get a steady 47mpg at 65/70 by doing this - and yes it is a petrol engine ![]() forgot to mention, mines a '95 E36 Edited by Rhys |

Tried some Bosch Super 4 plugs in the 540i, lost a little bottom end torque and smoothness. Interestingly, if you compare the nose lengths between the Bosch and NGK originals, they are slightly different, so the spark will occur in a slightly different position in the combustion chamber. NGK OEM only. Bimmer engines run hotter than most apparently and only OEM single prongs will do, as specified by BMW. Ring your local indie or stealer, they should sell 'em cheaply enough or at least tell you the part number etc...

I would agree with most and say that I would never recommend Champion and go with NGK all day long in BMW engines. The champion performance fall off is quite steep against others and I have found they can foul up quite easily and NGK's do run cooler as J Med mentions. Rob |

The only point of multi electrode plugs is to prolong plug life. The spark jumps the shortest gap untill that electrode erodes away, the spark then moves onto the next smallest gap. There are no performance or economy gains to be had from using different plugs. |

The best plugs for BMW are Original High Power Spark Plugs made by NGK. Part Number is 12129071003 and costs 7.85 each form a dealer. Cheers! |

I am personally dead againt the 4 prong ones. i knew an old engineer and he pointed out to me that the 4 prongs have 4 areas where the prong stops a spark path to the fuel whereas a single only has one. tests done prove that in any area the better burn came from a single prong over 3 or 4. its not my field but i have always stuck to this and never had an issue. my m3 engine used single prongs and ran perfect and i hammered that for 3000 miles in 7 days |

That's an interesting perspective (not passing judgement here BTW) but if the 4 electrode plugs reduced the efficiency of the plug by masking the spark, surely people wouldn't have much success with surface discharge plugs as found in some race engines and rotary engines?

In truth, this is not my field of knowledge and i picked this up from a race team who were against the idea of them. I have kind of taken this advice and steared clear of them since. |
