Hi, My 635 has been off the road for two months now because of a failed MOT. The main issue to overcome is the exhaust which I can't afford to replace.

Will they accept repairs? Can I cover it with putty and/or those bands? If so I could get it MOTed and save up for a new exhaust next year.

You should be able to as long as the exhaust is not blowing and or will fall off soon.

In other words, don't let it get to this state....

My six had its MOT today, quite relieved it only failed on a couple of points... Both rear subframe bushes are excessively worn, and the parking brake efficiency was too low (15%). About £300 inc labour my mechanic reckons (with bmw bushes), which sounds OK to me!

Emissions were just OK (CO 2.84%) but I read a previous thread which suggested it should be ideally be ~1.5%. Should i also get this adjusted?

Cheers all

who do you get to do your work in London? I want someone to do diff oil seals.

My 6 just came through its MOT with a CO of 2.2ish which the tester said was about right for the age and mileage. My car is a good deal older though being a 3453cc engine but with motronic (so don't know if the desired CO would be different)

Autowercs in Muswell Hill, Andy there is a former BMW technician and loves the six. He fitted a new petrol tank for me last month and the bill was very reasonable. That is the only work he's done for me so far but he definately seems to know his stuff. His number is 020 8883 7339.

Back on the road for another 12 months

When I replaced the wipers on the six I noticed they were a couple of inches shorter than the Tourings. After a bit a trial I found the E30 size blades (22" instead of 20" iirc) work fine & give you a bit more swept area. The cost the same too.

Easy upgrade.

Cheers Andy, I always thought the wipers on my six seemed a bit too small.. they are only 18" !!

I have since read apparently only the very last sixes ('89 reg) were fitted with 22" wipers, the rest were all fitted with 18".

I've thrown the old ones away now but the were about 2" less than the E30s. The unswept areas are much smaller now.

I used Bosch wipers which come with a spoiler on the drivers side. By using two "drivers" wipers you won't feel under-endowed in the wiper area

I believe the E34 535 had a wiper mechanism which pushed the blades onto the screen at higher speeds. don't think that was on the Six though.
