Hi, My 635 has been off the road for two months now because of a failed MOT. The main issue to overcome is the exhaust which I can't afford to replace. Will they accept repairs? Can I cover it with putty and/or those bands? If so I could get it MOTed and save up for a new exhaust next year. |

Cheers

You should be able to as long as the exhaust is not blowing and or will fall off soon. James |

My six had its MOT today, quite relieved it only failed on a couple of points... Both rear subframe bushes are excessively worn, and the parking brake efficiency was too low (15%). About £300 inc labour my mechanic reckons (with bmw bushes), which sounds OK to me! Emissions were just OK (CO 2.84%) but I read a previous thread which suggested it should be ideally be ~1.5%. Should i also get this adjusted? Cheers all |

who do you get to do your work in London? I want someone to do diff oil seals. My 6 just came through its MOT with a CO of 2.2ish which the tester said was about right for the age and mileage. My car is a good deal older though being a 3453cc engine but with motronic (so don't know if the desired CO would be different) |

Autowercs in Muswell Hill, Andy there is a former BMW technician and loves the six. He fitted a new petrol tank for me last month and the bill was very reasonable. That is the only work he's done for me so far but he definately seems to know his stuff. His number is 020 8883 7339. |

When I replaced the wipers on the six I noticed they were a couple of inches shorter than the Tourings. After a bit a trial I found the E30 size blades (22" instead of 20" iirc) work fine & give you a bit more swept area. The cost the same too. Easy upgrade. |

Cheers Andy, I always thought the wipers on my six seemed a bit too small.. they are only 18" !! I have since read apparently only the very last sixes ('89 reg) were fitted with 22" wipers, the rest were all fitted with 18".

I've thrown the old ones away now but the were about 2" less than the E30s. The unswept areas are much smaller now.
I used Bosch wipers which come with a spoiler on the drivers side. By using two "drivers" wipers you won't feel under-endowed in the wiper area ![]() I believe the E34 535 had a wiper mechanism which pushed the blades onto the screen at higher speeds. don't think that was on the Six though. |

Ive just bought a six and am considering upgrading the exhasut (think i
have a manifold leak). my firend does stainless systems, custom fab'd,
so i should have my current system up for grabs in about a month. if
its in good nick (i think its in fair condition), i'll ebay it and see
what response i get. I may fix it up if it requires it whilst its off
the car. pm me if ur interested. i'll pop it up on the for sale bit if
its any good.

Well good luck getting the manifold off. It's considered one of the most awkward jobs going & often involves removing the head to get the broken studs out.
It seems this is quite a common problem on the M30. FritzBitz do a s/s tubular manifold which is supposed to be a big improvement over the pre-Highline models. Would be a good match for your custom system. |

Tell me about it! i cleaned up a temporary m30 3.5 for my e30 and
snapped a manifold stud then. we drilled it out and tapped a new one
with the engine out. I'll just take a weekend if need be changing the
manifold on the 6 (better start with the wd and hammer taps now), don't
want to have to engine out just for a manifold. Fritz want around 800
for a manifold i think, my friend will custom make me one, to match the
system, mandrel bends etc. anyone had a full system on the m30? mine
has the older type manifold (b reg), and i think a tubular should make
a fair bit of difference.

I have the Frits system fitted, and along with the induction system i made it makes a usefull 17bhp improvement. It's not as exspensive as you thought though at £550. If your guy can make one i would be interested to see what it's like as it's a bugger making one for a RHD car as the steering box is in the way. Will probable take your guy days to make one. LHD sixes have about 3 different manifold options using SS, and are even better.

If i go for the option i'll get it picked and posted. Not sure yet. my 335i project is number one, six is second except general maintenance. www.335itc.co.uk. has some interesting vehicles, and 1000's of pics, no adverts. |
