Is it just up in Scotland or all over the UK that £5 notes are virtually a thing of the past. Meaning you end up walking around with about half a tonne of coins in your pocket? Get it sorted shops! |

Try coming to Ireland where the ATMs will not give out €5 or €10 - only €20 or €50.

£5 notes are getting rarer as most ATMs don't give them out. Don't know why TBH. |

Nope t'is just you Daz! I had two fivers in my pocket yesterday but now they aren't there Don't you mean £1 notes, now that is a note you don't see anymore. I know what you K, when we went to France a few years back, of I went to the money swap shop in Glasgow Airport only to be given a bundle of €50 notes that no shop or tourist attraction in Paris (yes major city in France) would want to take. Next time when we went to one of the Canary Islands I refused to accept €50 notes from aforementioned shop as we had so much bother in Paris. Got a rather rude look from the girl behind the desk though. When will they get it in their thick heads that nobody wants huge notes. The equivalent is like walking into a shop here to buy something and trying to pay with a something equivalent (if there ever was such a thing) as a £30 note! You would get told to off! Andrew |

Strangely, when in France recently the ATMs tended to give out €10 and €20 rather than €50.
I reckon part of it is the banks trying to encourage spending! |

Is this a scottish thing ? Obviously Scottish fivers are a different design ( and there are many of them). Where I live shops refuse to accept them because there are so many. Our ones are widely available here in Essex.

The Royal Bank of Scotland printed tribute Jack Nicklaus Scottish five pound notes dated 14th July 2005. These are being collected as a limited number of these are actually in circulation. |

Isn't that illegal? If you refuse to take a genuine Scottish note that is? There does seem to be a problem sometimes with English shops refusing to accept Scottish money. It is legal tender and it is Pounds Sterling after all! I have been to a post office/shop near Chester (i.e. not that far chuffin' South!!) when I handed over a Royal Bank of Scotland £10 the woman behind the shop counter part wanted to go off and check it at the post office counter to see if it was genuine! Cheek! So I just gave here an English note instead as I was in a hurry. When I have gone to England for work, I have gone to my bank and ask the counter staff especially for English notes and they just look at you funny but then nod in agreement when you tell them that you have had problems before south of the border. Last time when I went to Romford for work (That's Essex or very nearly init Jamie?) I actually went to Glasgow Airport where there is a cash machine that only gives out English notes. I then had no problems. We don't bother to forge fiver's up here, it just isn't worth the hassle for only £5, £20 now that's more like it! Andrew |

Show me a shop in England, Scotland or Wales that will accept Northern Irish money. What I find strange is the fact that all the banks can produce their own version of sterling - was it not enought to have a standard version? |

It's most amusing to hand over a Northern bank fiver on the mainland. Everyone looks at it like it's moon dust.

[/QUOTE] I manage a shop in essex and the reason we dont accept any scottish money is because there is so much forged scottish money around

Very true, but the robbers didn't bother with the bizarre fivers, they just half-hinched loads of 20s, 50s and 100s. That's why the Northern has taken all the old notes out of circulation and introduced new ones. General public can take in old notes and have them changed over, but if a dodgy bloke walks in wanting to change 26 million quid.... |
