Hi Guys and Gals!! I was looking at an american website a few months ago when i saw an article for the new 3 series, and it mentioned that the new 3 series coupe was going to be called the 4 series, m4 etc. It was saying that the 6 series is the coupe version of the 5 series etc. etc. I can not remember the website now, but has anyone else seen or heard anything about this? Maybe its possible that it will be launched as a 4 series purely for the american market??? |

Never been mentioned for Euroop that I've heard. Did hear that the 3 door 1 series could be called the 2 series, therefore making way for an M2, wonder could they fit an S54 motor in it........ |

The rumour that I had heard was that the coupé versions of the 1er would be the 2 series (including the M2), 3ers would become 4ers and 5ers would become 6er, etc.
However, while the coupé version of the 5er has become the 6er, the format is not going to happen fully due to the brand name of the M3 and M5. Don't know whether its true though. |

I think there was also some issue about infringing trade marks of other manufacturers with a 2 series, 4 series, etc. (in the same way that Porsche were originally going to call the 911 the 901 but Peugeot owned the rights to all 3 number name with a 0 in the middle). Not sure if that is true since the most obvious conflict would have been with Rover (i.e. 216, 420, etc.) and up until last week they still owned the Rover brand name (it was only licensed to MG Rover). The Rover name was sold to SAIC (China) last week for £11m, a nominal sum for a once proud brand.

What dergside is right, they won't do a 2 & 4 series as rover still own the copyright to the 200 & 400 Series from their old cars.
Also BMW won't split them as it would affect sales of the 3 series alot |

And Mazda always had the 323. They were going to call the new coupe the 4 series but decided against it because the 3 series coupe is so well known. |

Surely all these numbers are just this, i.e. numbers and not copyrighted names?? I didn't know it was possible to copyright numbers unless they formed part of a brand name, but model numbers are just that, model numbers. I wasn't aware this was the case. Seems a bit silly, especially as, as pointed out, BMW and Mazda both use the 323. With Mazda it was a model type (i.e. the shape of the vehicle) whereas with BMW it was only the first 3 from 323 that depicts the model type and the rest the engine size (though not the case anymore!) Some strange politics that go on in the motor world! Regards Mike Edited by 540 V8 |
