After the starter motor saga (see separate thread) the car's back on the road and it passed its MOT yesterday
Yippee - not having driven it for a while and not having much time I took it for a gentle trundle around Richmond Park with the sun roof open Negotiated a speed bump in the usual way and not having driven the car for a while forget how much you need to stir the gear lever on these cars .....damn thing starts pinking Now it seemed to stop very quickly but I thought anti knock sensors stopped detonantion long before it is audible Is there an anti knock sensor connection I might have disturbed whilst changing the starter?? It's an Evo Sport so always run on ordinary unleaded - never had pinking before but then agai I've hardly ever had the sunroof open.... Any ideas anyone?? Cheers |

I don't think they have knock sensors, too old!
Could be a loose nut on the exhaust manifold. |

Anti-Knock ! blimey if anybody could get that to work on the S14 engine,
give them a medal. These cars never had anti-knock, wouldn't work anyway. Suggest you have bad fuel. Try using super. My engine for eg, runs so much better on ESSO super than anything else. I too had a pinking issue once with Optimax! |

blimey - never ocurred to me that it didn't have anti knock...
...even tho designed in early 80's it's like the space shuttle compared with what i'm used to.... Not sure about the exhaust manifold - definitely pinking Could be fuel - it's been standing for quite a while |

I had pinking issues with Optimax as well. And even the V-Power "FERRARI" fuel is pinking alittle bit. Car runs fine on TOTAL's excellium..... How "old" is the petrol in your tank? You mentioned not having used the car for some time. |

Hate to say it but old Montego and Meastros had knock sensors back in 1983/4! The ECU's would constantly run as much ignition as possible untill it detected pinking, then back it back for a few revolutions, then creep back up again. They were all full of nastyness! EDIT: Jonners, maybe you should have crushed the banger! As others have said, I'd try different fuel first, but run it out of the old fuel before you do and change the fuel filter aswell. Go and buy one if you are loving them so much. But they didn't come with an anti cry sensor The M3 therefore comes with a ear to ear grin sensor ...and somebody who could manage in 1986 to squeeze almost 85bhp/liter out of a (reliable!!) production engine doens't need a knock sensor, don't you think?? |

Not loving the Maestro/Montego but loathing them, I wouldn't have one of those if it was given to me (Maestro MG Turbo with zero miles perhaps, but even then it would be rotten out ). They were truely full of NASTYNESS! |

Filled up this weekend with Optimax - sorry! V-Power
No pinking at all - had a great time Have never used anything other than ordinary 95 before but perhaps it was the old fuel in the tank - but then again that had only been in there for about 3 months Will try 95 again and see what happens |
