Recenty bought the Haynes manual for the E30/E34. (To 1991).

Has to be the worst car service/repair maual I've ever seen. Gives nothing but sketchy details on a very limited number repairs mainly concerning the E30. Useless for E34 owners. Expensive too at 30.00.

TBH i think all the Haynes manuals i have owned have been terrible, the pictures are usually for left hand drive cars and never the car you have!!

I have heard people on here call it the Haynes comic book, now you know why!

Many people have said (on the forum) that the manual is pish.

I did get one off EBay for about 2 then sold it ! - I got another (free) with one of my older cars - sold that one on as well

If you do a bit of a search there is a link to download it in pdf format - it is useful for a few things but that's about it

I agree, haynes is good for the odd few things but if you are short of paper to start your fire on the cold winter evenings.........

Bentley manual is tops, almost as if BMW wrote it themselves!

Get it, you won't be sorry!

I bought a Haynes one for a Volvo 480ES that I had about 10 years ago. It was absolutely brilliant for everything. There were times I did work on that car just because I had the instructions on how to do it.

I think it probably helped that mechanically all 4 series Volvos were the same and it was only the odd lekky bit on the 480ES that was any different.

That was a good book...much better than the actual car.

Haynes manuals are very useful for starting a fire or placing between a
trolley jack and a sill. The old ones were superb and better than the very
expensive and slightly overrated Bentley manuals. The best BMW ones
were the old E30 (bright orange) ones pls the bright blue E28 and dark
blue E21 manuals. These old ones were over 400 pages thick and detailed
things like stripping gearboxes. You can buy them at autojumbles for a
fiver. Sadly there was never a decent old stype manual for the E34.

Then, for some reason, they became much thinner with not much actual
technical info and crammed with crap about passing the MOT. The
current one are indeed a bit poor.

I'm not overly enamoured with the Bentley manuals. They have their place
but I've often been forced to back to an oily old Haynes for a lot of stuff.

The only bad Haynes manual I've ever had was for my E34 (so the one this topic is about).

The Bentley manual was very good, and worth every penny.

All other Haynes manuals I've had were good, I was amazed at the E34 one.

I've just bought the Haynes for my bike...its brilliant !

Best Wishes

Nigel
