wife went out the other morning to start the car and gues what ? thats right it just made a highpitch noise. she told me so i tried it and it did it twice agin. sounded like the starter was slightly off but phoned the garage and they sent a truck and took the car in. when i phoned to see what the problem had been i was told the car was flooded and it had started first time for them. they got the car about 4hrs after we had tried. i find it strange that a 00 320i would flood. it was not partucularly cold that day either. so i am wondering if this might be somthing else or if it could be the case and how can i stop it in the future as my wife travels alot on early (6,7ish) morning flights and i would end up driving here if her car wont start. |

Your 320i is the 2.0 isn't it? If so, then its the M52 engine and these are easy enough to flood. The problem often is related to starting it from cold previously and only running it for a minute or two, for example if you start it to move it on the driveway, etc. It is drinking a rich mixture at that point and doesn't run for long enough to weaken the mixture. The next time you try to start it it pumps in more rich fuel on top of the residual from the previous start and if it doesn't catch first time then you'll find its flooded. Its more likely to happen in the cold weather like we've been having because the mixture is more rich than usual to compensate for the cold. It happened me with the 523i last winter, same thing as with you, I called the AA, they brought it to the dealer and they rang me asking what was wrong with it because it started first time for them. The key seems to be, if you start it from cold always let it run for long enough for the idle to settle before turning it off again. Edited by Dergside |

I was warned of that when buying the old Z3 earlier in the year. Of course when you give this kind of info to a woman they just think you're crazy and will in no way do it. So 2 or 3 times I had to wait for an hour or so before starting the car after swmbo rings to say the car won't start.
