Driving a US-spec (S52) M roadster at Spartanburg's Performance Center I'm planning to do some track days at Rockingham and maybe Nürburgring and am thinking of getting my own helmet rather than taking pot luck on hiring one. Legislation has moved on with EC standards and only older stock in shops has 'type A' stickers. I don't like full-face helmets. Are open helmets (meeting the old type A spec) acceptable for track use? Tim, Laguna Seca 2001 M roadster (aka Zmurf) Edited by Zmurf |

It always used to be full face in open cars(ie convertables, single seaters) and open face in saloons, rally cars etc.

Big tip. Dont buy a helmet mail order. Much better to hit a few motorbike shops and try helmets on yourself. The last time I bought a helmet for my motorcycling I had a right job. So wanted a Shoei but just couldnt get one that was comfortable. Ended up with an AGV. Really makes sense to try several types on. If its uncomfortable you will find it distracting. |

Thanks for the feedback. After trying several open face helmets, I ended up getting a Caburg Downtown (meets the new ECE 22.05 regulations). Comfortable, with an integral sun visor--not that I needed it at Rockingham on Sunday.
