Topic: Fog lights Posted: 17-March-2004 at 21:35 |
Hi
I have recently purchased an E46 325i conv and noticed I only have one fog light working. On closer inspection it appears that only the offside rear fog is equipped with a bulb holder. The near side fog has a blanking plate in place of a bulb holder. Can any-one enlighten me?

I beleive that only one is ever installed - some people wire up the other as a mod.
My 328i 95 only has one too.

The law changed so only one rear fog light was required - seems stupid to me, but there you go!
Obviously for asthetic reasons, the other, unused, red lens was left intact.
Suppose it IS legal to have two on these cars, I don't know??

Yes it is legal, in fact only having one can cause you grief when abroad, if you need to use them and you only have one, its on the wrong side !!

most small cars only have one rear fog light with the other side containing the car's only reverse light.

This is true Killian, and gives you "construction and use" problems if driving on the "wrong" side of the road.
Try and MOT one with the lamp on the wrong side.

Does anyone know how to wire up the other fog light, mine has holder, circuit board on the lamp and bulb for it!!!
Other than piggy backing from the other side is there a wire that simply needs connecting as it has everything else in place?

You could wire it from the other side but check if there is a live point for this (just not connected) - get your phase tester out and see.

"phase tester" - hark at Killian!
I've got a bulb soldered to a couple of bit of wire to test for a live! Does for me!
(what you want a 'phase tester' for anyway on a car? It's DC - there aren't any!)

ok, correct me if Im wrong but arent those screwdrivers with the bulb in them called phase testers & don't they light up if there is a current in the cable (assuming the phase tester is properly grounded)?

Killian,
(1) Possibly they could be called that, but maybe only because they are sold in Electrical resellers, in expensive packaging, and aimed at the Home market to check that the ring main is turned off before you stick your finger in the socket! (That's AC, which IS phased!)
(2) Yes they do light up, but when they find voltage not current, that's the measurement of power been drawn, and is nothing to do with volts.
I'll get me coat Simon

oooh he's looking for a fight Killian lol.
You can get dc ones , omron recently gave me one, doubles as a microwave oven radiation tester, and can be dragged down a cable to see where any break is.This one will work on AC or DC.
Youd be better off getting a cheap multimeter to be honest.

either way I was referring to the screwdrivers that have a bulb inside & a wire comin from the top which can be connected to an earth. You stick this end onto the earth and the other end onto the wire to be tested

Its Handbags at 10 Paces !!!
Only one bulb is fitted as a cost down, if only one is required a saving can be made, on 1,000,000 cars a year its probably in the region of £50k which, with other savings increases the profit margins

Hey,
there's nothing wrong with rovers as long as you don't mind clutches that fail after 30K, interior trim that falls off and that lovely fake wooden trim they always put in their cars.
Only kidding, except about the fake wood! My brother has had two rovers a 216SI and a 25 1.4. Never had any trouble with either. Mind you a friend of mine does own a 216 coupe that is possibly one of the worst built cars I have ever been in.

anyway going in 340 again in couple of weeks !
Why are the camera partnership driving round in Primera estates ? catch more people than with white van ?

Yes I knew that really!
But the bit of wire is NEVER long enough, and you need three hands to use it, so its much cheaper & easier to make your own out of an old bulb, a couple of l.o.n.g bits of wire & a couple of 'croc' clips - sorted

The wood trim in my rover Coupe was real wood, I know as I took it off and trimmed it in leather to match the seats. I never had probs with BQ in 5 yrs I had it!
With the leccy screwdrivers, make sure you use the correct one!! I tested the house mains with one - Big flash and pop.... and a melted screwdriver - then checked and found it was a 12 volter!!!
Good job I'd connected the croccy clip on the earth as I'd have a melted arm - thought it was strange to have the clip as the 240V drivers have no croccy clip!
