Hi,

Im new to this forum as ive just brought a 1998 e39 tds auto yesterday. I have an issue with the hand brake. when I pull up the hand brake to engage it, it drops stright back down and the release button can be pulled out from the hand brake itself.

As the car is an automatic it wont roll anywhere if i leave it in "P" but I'd still like to have the hand brake working again. Anyone have any ideas what could be wrong?

Sounds like the ratchet inside the lever has failed. More investigation is needed to be sure. You'll need to get it sorted, holding the weight of the car just on the park brake alone can cause damage to the gearbox.

Oh, almost forget, WELCOME!

Let us know how you get on

Mike

Itall depends on the mechanism and can vary quite a bit. Check out www.realoem.com and have a look at the exploded diagrams on there, it may help.

Good luck

I alway leave a car in gear at night!! car is not on a slope do...I do it as if it's frosty it's not supposed to be good for the brakes.and once the hand brake sized on me, so since ive never pulled the hand brake at night!!
