Today saw our much requested Rolling Road Day at Hypertech, Bonnybridge.
Despite a few late dropouts, we still had 9 cars up on the rollers. There was a mixed bag of results, which I'll let the individuals concerned discuss. Main problems seem to be with the M cars with limiters cutting in too early. What did seem to work on Cliff's M3 was to take it for a run, then put it straight onto the rollers without stopping the engine. Apart from that another good day and nice to see everyone again Onno Andrew R Curnrik Webdunk Rab Stevie Jim Cliff Fluffnik |

Good snaps Neil - thanks!
Mixed feelings about the day : - Really pleased with the number of folk who popped in to say hello over and above those taking part. I think this was one of our busier meets of the year so far. - Very happy with the welcome from Hypertech and their approachable, friendly nature. - Not so happy with the issues getting realistic numbers from a good few of the cars. Onno's and Curnriks were very believable with figures very much in the region of manufacturer's claims. The E39 M5s hated the rollers as usual which I found disappointing having broached the issues ahead of the day. Andrew's E60 didn't fancy staying in gear to get a clear run which again had been discussed beforehand. - My own car did not even get close to where it should be; coming up with 239.8@6125 revs on the plot. This despite the fact that the car was revving clean and true to just north of 7000revs as indicated by the rev counter so I suspect there was some issue at play here - especially as the 3.2 Evo which followed me on to the rollers exhibited the same issue and made i.r.o. 30bhp more than the GT which is close to what you would have expected based on BMW's figures for the cars. |

Well guys, I enjoyed my wee visit as did my big Brother Vic. I am absolutely gutted about not getting my car on the rollers but as a few of you know, my exhaust seems to have given up the ghost so I recon that if I'd put it on, the exhaust would have probably gone bang (completely) and I wouldn't get a true reading anyway. A huge thanks to all who organised this event, I know that it was done partially on my request (along with others) like I said, gutted I didn't get on the rollers. |

Ludolph the Legnum has a Very (big) Shiny Nose... I got sensible(ish) numbers and the car and rollers played nicely together - my gearbox neither upshifts nor kicksdown in tip mode - once they'd shrunk the road to suit my wheelbase. A chilly but fun day, if a little frustrating for the ///M folks. |

enjoyed some of my day, Had a laugh catching up with you all pity I can't say the same about the later part of the day.
the rollers issue was exactly what I expected, what I didn't expect was for my gearlinkage to collapse and leave me stuck in 4th gear for the majority of the trip home waiting for the ambulance now to take it back to the A&E |

Just wanted to say thanks to Ono and Duncan for doing the organising. And thanks to Neil for the photos. I enjoyed meeting a few new faces, Jim and Alistair. I was a bit disappointed with my result 286 bhp which I was told was due to the autobox wanting to change. But I reckon it was worth doing for the experience and just to say I've done it. I'm really not sure how it could have been run any other way. The car needs to be told to stay in gear, mibbie plugging in a laptop to override the ECU??? My dad really enjoyed it esp seeing a number of M3 and M5 models in the flesh. Thanks to Stevie and Jim for letting me and the old boy look over a couple of nice Ms! Sorry to hear about your tale of woe Stevie, hope you get it sorted. Andrew PS Guys, I would strongly recommend that you check your rear tyre pressures as the wee lad was supposedly putting them up to 45 psi and then re-setting them back to normal, but mine weren't even anywhere near right when I checked them before going home! And the wee lad lost one of my dust caps and tried to tell me there wasn't even one on that side! |

Good wee morning spend with automotive porn. Judging on
Cliffs figures of about 290, and mine of 311 those rollers seem to reading about 50 down. Was good being able to just nip along for a wee butchers as you said Duncan. There was a good number that come along for a look and meet. Bumper going on this morning, can't wait to get mine out after being out in Colin's yesterday afternoon, |

Yup that matches mine and the Evo. But why so consistently down I wonder? I see your RPM at peak power at least looks believable... |

Gutted to have missed the day, and sorry to hear of your breakdown. Be sure to say hi to my motor should you be down B4BMW anytime soon Stevie! I'm starting to forget that I actually own a car having seen so little of it this year for one reason or another!

Yeah im not bothered one bit to all the figures of the M's are roughlly or dead on 50 brake down so figure that out ?, But to be excactlly twenty behind barry tells you both our cars are running perfect in my mind. i put money on it that these cars would make the power on another set of rollers. A big thanks to izzy for driving me through and putting up with me and another thanks to mark for the advice on getting the car to rev round to the limit, |

Just another thought about the figures for my car. Book figures for mine are 333 bhp and 450 Nm of torque. According to the print out I got, my bhp was 286 and the torque was just shy of 450 which I took as being o.k. as that was what the book figure was. On a closer look at the graph my car according to the rollers produced 450 lbft torque which is not the same as 450 Nm of torque. 450 lbft torque = 610Nm!!!! If I had 610 Nm of torque going thru my gearbox I would be a bit worried as it has a torque design limit of 600 Nm. So it would appear the the rollers under estimated bhp by about 50 bhp (286 + 50 = 336bhp which would be over the book values for me, just) but the torque was over estimated by about 1/3 which is quite something. Can the rest of you guys look at your torque figures and let me know your thoughts. Andrew |

It was a good day, good seeing new faces, and some nice cars turned up. I was pleased with my results:- 173.8, book on her is 170. So i was well chuffed. But i wasn't so chuffed with the battery in my camera, i was hoping to get a lot more video. An in car charger and a second battery ordered from amazon today. I'm going to try and get some blank CD's and copy every thing i took. I'm planning on brining them to Davey's if anyone wants one.

Just had a wee search on tinter web, and the guy should have been doing the dyno runs in 5th on both the e36 and e46 M3's and the M5s, as this is the 1:1 ratio in the gear box, so I'm not sue if this would cause the difference but I might imagine so
Oh and what did Fluffy's Jap beast put out??lol. Edited by vpricey |

218.3 @ ~5750rpm The lower end of the torqueue curve makes no sense though... >320ftlb @ ~1200rpm I should bleedin' co-co John! The 220 - 200 ftlb plateau between 3k and 5.5k corelates well with the turbos expected behaviour but overall there's summut weird in the torque/power relationship as plotted. Bottom line: The car overtook as desired 4-up in the borders today; the B10 would have been quicker everywhere... The AFR plot which I saw but don't have a print of suggests that taking boost to the 0.8 bar used by manual VR4s should not be a problem, especially with the additional transmission cooling we're fitting. Hey! It's the shopping car. The Legnum is a phenomenal bit of kit, though it does feel down to a price compared to the E39 - there's slight shuttle shake on M-way ridges and the fittings are functional but plasticy - and will undoubtedly make a better Alpine load lugger than the late E220. |
