Just watched the video and apart from the "Prisoner Cell Block H" acting it was pretty good.
As to which is the best car, well this is completely subjective, however having never driven both and probably never likely to either, I can only say what I would like to see. I think to have the best of both worlds I would love to see the 1 series M with a normally aspirated M engine from the likes of the M3 CSL. The reason being that is, as we all know the true essence of any M car is it's heart.... the engine. We would then have a truly light (By today's standards), nimble, high revving M car, that handles sublimely. As to which is going to be a future classic. I think both. The current M3 because it will be the last M car with a M division normally aspirated engine, for the purists in mind. The 1 seires M because of it's limited production run, and at last BMW have finally produced a car that hark backs to the halcyon days of the E30 M3. I will finish with this for you to ponder. One of the true reasons the E30 M3 has become such an iconic drivers cars is because, BMW or more particulary M Division built the car with racing in mind in the first instance, and later adapted it for the road, and not the opposite as is the norm now. |

The reason the E30 M3 has become such an iconic drivers car and a classic in it's own right is down to the fact it was very good in it's day, there is a limited supply and they are older. They're like hens teeth compared to the E36, E46 and the E92. They're also old enough not to appeal to the yoof anymore so they don't have the image problem that cars like the E36 and E46 have now that they are cheap enough to be owned by the boy racers and the scallies. Ten years ago the E30 was a bit of a chav wagon which was reflected in values. Now the neds have moved onto the E36 and E36 the E30 has suddenly become desirable again. The fact that demand for good ones outstrips supply helps to keep values up. A very similar situation to cars like the the Sierra Cosworth. I'm sure I won't win many friends with this but M purists IMHO are people stuck in the past and out of touch with reality. The simple fact is car makers can no longer afford to make cars like the E30 M3 anymore. |

E30 = E46+E36+E92
The 1M is undoubtedly a marketing marvel for the M Division if what they say is true and that there will be limited numbers produced. This can also be said of the E92 M3 racing spec that is due out in 2013 I believe..If numbers are limited, it will too see the iconic status the E30 has seen. |

total war of the ///M s here. loving this colourful debate however i would have to side with the purists. as would be expected of me, born of my father and his old school status. i cant bear a car without a normally aspirated engine and manual transmission ( speaking as if i've driven every car in the orld here which ive not) i feel it takes from the drive as though turbo or supercharger is cheating and taking the effort out of a car. as for transmission whats the point in automatics unless you physically cant use one? the noise of a heel toe blip down the gears? out of these two cars i'd agree with my dad in that the 1M should have normally aspirated engine but given it doesnt i'd still choose it over the newer porbably quicker M3.
Though you really cant beat the burble of a V8
both cars are truly remarkable and would leave most of us standing and agreed many of the newer models are very common but again like everyone said, "they may not be in years to come" i could imagine there being a plentiful supply of E30 ///M back in the day before they were too modified to death or hit a tree |

Exactly the point I was trying to make. You look at any car with racing or Rallying in mind and they are excellent drivers car. Audi quattro, Lancia Delta Integrale, etc. |

Mind you not all clssics are good drivers cars.
The MG is a case in point. What I will say is that all M cars will achive classic status, even the E36. Once the Yoofs lose interest in slamming them and fitting stoopid fookin alloys etc they will start to become appealing. |

True mate. Just look at the M3 CSL. A car built in small numbers that is focused for the spirited driver........Already it has iconic status. As I said in my initial post both the E92 and the 1 series M will, in my opinion, will become much re veered items in the coming years. As to which is best I'll leave that to those better qualified than I. PS If even they can't make up their minds I'll have one each thanks |
