Topic: 525 Lights or lack of! Posted: 03-March-2003 at 21:47 |
Coming down the A40M last night driving on dipped headlights they suddenly went out! Bit of panic but my headlights worked ok. However the cars in front were a bit upset so I tried my (fog lights) fine they worked. Then after a few miles my dipped head come on again then off and on.
I think I have a clue as to the problem? When you park with the dipped lights on, they turn off and also the nearside parking light. I think this has something to do with my present problem. But am I on the right trail and if so where is this control and what do I do with it. Help…

I had exactly this problem on my 89 E34, it turned out to be a badly soldered relay in the half burn control box, can you let me know what car you have and I'll try to help

yes no problem, its the big black jobby in the relay box, mines an f redg 525i too, so we might be onto something here.
Its called the lamp control module
open the bonnet, stand at the front of the car, on the right hand side, behind the suspension cover ??, just beneath the windscreen there is a black box, with fuses, relays and control modules in it.
When you open the cover, the big black one nearest you is the lamp control module, or it is on mine any, pull it out, open it up, and have a jolly good look round it, the problem on mine was quite obvious, but then again, its what I do for a living, electronics that is, not bm's.
If your not sure, where are you?, I'm in worcester, so if your not too sure, and I'm close enough come round for a coffee and we can be confused together!!
Bm dont actually intend you to repair these, they covered mine in green gunk, like a varnish, its a laquer to try and hinder you, but the tommy won on this one.
If yours turns out to be in a different position, do you have the bentley manual?, that tells you where they all hide, if not maybe we can talk on the phone whilst you look in the bonnet, and I'll try to help that way.

Your very welcome John, looks like I'm in trouble now, I think my head gasket is going, I'm getting problems with the cooling system.
I can handle the electronics/electrics, but I darent attempt to remove the head, it may never go back on again, so its off to my mate the mechanic tomorrow
I bet this is going to hurt !!!

John how dare you lol
mine was diagnosed today as a head gasket, apparently I've caught it early, it started to throw water out after short journeys, no white smoke, but I imagine it depends on where the gasket has gone.
Apparently it need a "top gasket set", a head skim, polish the ports ??, and reseat the valves.
My chap has quoted me £400, and I'll have it back by the weekend.
Its a shame, but I suppose something had to go, I've got 196k on the clock

I'm pleased your news was good, mine isnt I'm afraid, the heads gone, my mechanic chappy is recomending a service exchange from a place in northants, called head technology, or something, its a bit pricey at £460, but it is a complete rebuild, and does have a 3 year warranty

Sorry to hear your news, by the way my dash fault has also cured itself with a good run out. I think it was just damp that was causing the problem.
I guess now you have to decide the best way to sort your motor ie How much is it worth against how much its going to cost you for repair.
I know you will have done this coz I have just done the same thinking my head had gone.
I thought of sourcing a replacement engine then repairing my old engine at my leisure to a high standard.
By the way check out the insurance topic in 5 series.
Best Regards
John

super 5
sometimes when an engine is starving for fuel you can get a white smoke. Usually on the darker side.
