Topic: Alloys and end bumper bit Posted: 14-August-2004 at 21:06 |
I have just succumbed to a shark nose, 1981 vintage. The cross-spoke alloys are a bit tired, I was wondering if I should have them reconditioned or just get some knock-offs, and if so, where I might get them done or bought, as the case might be?
Also, the driver's side plastic end bit of the rear bumper is missing -- does anyone know a part number and/or where I might find one?
Thanks in advance!

What are the last 7 digits of your VIN no?

The rest of the car doesn't seem too bad, it was rebuilt about 5 or 6 years ago, and seemed to be in good nick...
I couldn't see any signs of the dreaded front wing rust, but I didn't have the bumper off....

Right, the part numbers you need are:
Nearside: 51 11 1 866 409
Offside: 51 11 1 866 410
On Monday morning, give Andy Howlett at Motormec a call: (01502) 500590. Tell him you-know-who sent you...

Thanks, I hope so too. I am a lazy bugger though, so I made sure I bought one that didn't start out needing major work before I bought it. I hope it stays that way!

...and if you PM me your contact details, I'll send you your very own parts reference CD-ROM. Once installed on your PC (works on XP, no problem), just key in the last 7 digits of your chassis number whenever you need parts.
You'll never know how you managed without it....
BTW, the fact that you'll also be able to look up part numbers for every BMW built up until July 2001 is but a bonus...

Does anyone have details of what sort of alloys I could fit? Are there any restrictions on the size, recommended sizes, makes, shapes, etc?

Oh dear, you've posted that twice.
Well, if you want to refurbish your cross-spokes, then do so. I don't like 'em 'cos they're a pain to keep clean....

If you're prepared to shell out for them, then these are quite practical:
otherwise these:
(but don't forget to buy hubcentric adaptor rings if you're using these alloys, as they were designed for the E39 Five, which has 74.1mm hubs rather than 72.5mm)
or these:
will also show off a Six remarkably well....
