Topic: How to spot a genuine E30 325i sport? Posted: 03-March-2005 at 14:30 |
I'm off to see an E30 325i sport at the weekend and was wondering if anyone had any tips as to how to spot if it's a fake? I understand that the headlining should be black, it should have map-reading lights in the rearview mirror and should be able to crack 60 in 2nd gear. Apparently, it hasn't got PAS, is this right? Also, can anyone tell me how to identify an LSD? Many thanks indeed! Alex. |

I had a Mtec-1 version, D reg. Definitely has a black roof lining, not sure about the lights in the rear view mirror as mine did not have them.
Take the chassis no. and enter it into this website Online ETK I thought they all came with LSD and PAS, cannot assist with identification! Someone here will definitely know more! Good Luck Edited by Nostrils |

Assuming there is nothing binding and the gearbox is in neutral.. you shouldnt be able to turn a rear wheel by hand with just that one side jacked up, the LSD will offer too much resistance.
Sport has a dogleg box.. but it was also an option on the others. Sport has a limited range of paint colours.. they were mainly Lachsilber in the UK. I'm not sure you are correct on the PAS thing. A chassis number check is the only sure fire way of telling. There was a period of time around '87-'88 when no Sports were made.. so you had to 'hop up' a regular 325 from the options list. |

well the sports didn;'t have the dog leg box, that was only the m3. you could get all the piant colours as far as i'm aware and lachs silver (lachsilber, in german) is now a rare colour. all sports had PAS as far as i'm aware.
he is a spec list that was standard of the 325i sport as of 1990 - Front vented disc brakes; rear solid disc brakes - Anti-lock braking system - De-chrome - M Technic steering wheel (Style II), leather gear knob and gaiter - M Technic sports suspension - Spoiler equipment front, rear spoilers & side, rear skirts (Style II) - Colour-coded door mirrors - 5-speed sports gearbox with conventional gate pattern - Limited-slip differential (25% lock up) - Alloy wheels (7J x 15 Cross Spoke Style) - BMW sports seats - Rear centre arm-rest - Opening side rear windows - Velour carpeting - Anthracite roof lining - Check/control system - Halogen front fog lights - Headlight cleaning system - Map reading lamps hope that this helps Edited by billgates e30 |

Cheers guys, that's a big help. The only thing which hangs in the balance is the PAS by the sound of it. Hopefully I won't have a wasted journey (it's about 4 hours each way to see this car) Really and truely though, as long as it's got the close ratio 'box and slippy diffy.....and's in better overall condition than my current 325i, it'll probably be good enough for me! Especially if I can beat him down on price :) |

remeber that the sports seats could come in cloth or leather so don't let cloth ones make you think its not genuine. also it doesn't need to say sport on the v5 to make it one. you could always get the reg and go to a dealer and ask what options it had from new so long as its still on the original plates

Thats a good idea, take a note of the telephone number of your local BMW Dealer, take the chassis number and give them a call - Explain that you are checking the validity of its Sport status....and they may offer more information too!! If the buyer is not happy with this or looking at the V5 for the previous owner details, then they have someting to hide. Good Luck |

That site is absolutely mint, mate. If only someone had said about that site when I was panicing if I had bought a car that had the Nikasil problem. It shows the production date on there as opposed to the registration date. Thanks :) much oblidged. Starfury |

The main thing daft as it sounds is the Black Headlining as people don't usually go to these lengths when copying , and just put a kit on so this really does seperate the real ones from the fakes. Only available in white black red or silver and all had lsd Did a lot of miles looking for a nice one in the end gave up and bought an M3 (did a lot of miles looking for one of them to) Cheers Andy |

Yep 99.9 % sure ! I have seen lots of Sport Wannabees out there in various colours some even 4 doors . but as i say most don't go to the trouble of changing the roof lining . |

Later ones were available in a slightly wider range of colours, e.g. Dolphin Grey.

yeah, been checking looks like your right on the colour thing. heres what i've found up until now
Dolphin Grey Brilliant Red Diamond Black Sterling Silver Lachs Silver Alpine White i know that the headlining is a real bitch to change which is why most don't bother changing it. it should also have soft velour carpets, rather than just normal weave carpets. |

i don't think the reds varied that much on the later e30's (excluding m3's) and brill was the only one, don't think henna was available after a certain date. i suppose dolphin is a kind of dark silver. i know that bmw offered vulcan grey for a very short period but have only heard of this colour and never seen it before but i believe it was available on the e30, it is a non metalic grey. looks sweet as far as i've heard.

With regards to the colours, if you were willing to pay, then you could have any available colour at the time of manufacture, I've seen a blue sport that I originally thought wasn't genuine, but later found out it was, it was a sort of pastel blue, can't remember the name, EDIT, I think it was called mineral blue!...very very rare colour. Granite grey is another very rare colour, and also as Chris says Vulcan grey. Also, a car that is made up to look like a sport could save you some money if it's a kitted and LSD'd 325i SE, if the money is right, you could be better of buying a good SE with the options, than paying the premium for a sport.
Chris, sorry I didn't reply to your PM on the zone, I have the spare key, user manual for the sport here ready to be posted, still no sign of the cruise though.... Could you PM me your addy please!? Cheers! Edited by Simon325i sport |

Spent a few hours at the Car Club office yesterday I was able to go through all the E30 brochures. I have a number of them on loan and I will be able to copy them. Not had much chance to study them yet. As regards to the colours available to the Sport, I have one that says the Sport models available in these colours. Brilliant Red,Sterling Silver, Diamond Black and Granite Silver this is complete with colour swatches. Then another one with price list and specs ( Bill Gates Is correct) it states that metallic paint is available at £375. so that means its possible to see a Sport in many other colours, Kashmir Beige is in the brochure as metallic ugh!! This all relates to 1990 I will be going through the others when I have time. Ron |
