Whilst posting on another thread I got to thinking about the most disappointing car I've ever owned.

Back in 1995 I was given custody of an almost new mk2 Saab 900 cabrio for a weekend. Truthfully it was brilliant and I promised myself I'd buy one one day.

In 2002 I bought a four year old 93 LPT.

It was crap! I had loads of issues with it but most importantly was the fact that at motorway speeds there was no communication between the steering wheel and the front tyres. It was like driving a jelly.

Got rid of it less than a year later.

Anybody else bought something that they always wanted only to find the dream and the reality were poles apart?

(As an addendum, the second most dissapointing was the E46 316ti I bought last Christmas. Never have I driven a more fragile car. Loads of problems and almost all expensive).

had a '92 civic, HATED it!!! got it as a replacement when my first car was stolen.  had it for 9 months.  upside was that i paid 900 for it and traded it for 1000, so i suppose every cloud has a silver lining.

I've had lots of rotten cars too but I never actually aspired to owning any of them. Have you bought anything you actually really wanted only to find it was crap?

not really, my car history doesn't go back to far.  first car was a mirage loved that, then civic, then two mondeos, the 520 and a4 and now the 525.  never really saw a car and thought someday i'm going to own that.  i can see where you are coming from with the saab though.  i thought they are reallt good looking cars, until i got into one, didn't like it at all.

Don't think reckless will be happy to hear about your Saab. He just spent
700000 Euro getting his one in tip top shape.

My first car was a '96 Fiat Brava. I'd always liked the look of them. I did
prefer the Bravo (3 door) but they were more expensive to buy and insure so
I went for the Brava. BIG mistake. It was such a load of crap. Only had it for 6
months and the engine broke. I was down two valves. Left it at the
mechanics and bought a '02 1.2 Stilo which I loved. Mechanic phoned me
last year to see what I wanted to do with the car. It had been sitting on his
drive for 2 years. Told him to scrap it and keep the money.

No. Just had no power. I ended up trading it in for a '00 Landcruiser. I still
like the Stilo's. And I very very nearly bought a Stilo Abarth (2.4 litre 5
cylinder with semi auto 'box and sat nav etc), but I'm very glad I bought the
M3.

i had a couple of civics including a '92 and once you accept the hardness of the suspension and the lack of plushness, they're pretty good (and a hell of a lot more reliable than the german junk i've had for the last couple of years!!!).

most disappointing car was an integra. i ALWAYS wanted one. when i finally got one (when no one else had them) it looked fantastic. i couldn't bear to drive it because it's sheer hardness always made me feel i was breaking it. it lasted a couple of months.

sold it and got an A4 tdi. then the fun started because the opposite was the case- it always drove fine but i actually was breaking it as i drove

My first car was an '85 E30 316 - salvaged from a flood - more holes that a collendar and rattled/shook at 60mph. No power steering didnt help either. It dropped to bits, the paint was holding the rust together.

My dad has had loads of Saabs. From a 99L, an old 96 with column change and coaster handle next to peddels, a 900GLs, a 900i and now a 900i 16v (still old shape) bought off ebay for 400. Built like tanks - the 900i has been nearly rolled, ran into by a lorry, had a clio plough into it (the clio's door was a right off - the Saab got a scratch). They are safe cars - you feel safe sat in them. Believe it or not the origional Saabs were designed by a group of bods without a driving licence between them - all aero engineers. The new ones aren't close, my mates got a new 900i and it feels plain, the steering wheel is spring loaded (drive one and you know what I meen) and the worst thing is the plasticky sound the indicator gives off when activated. The black panel thing is a good idea though.

Always kinda wanted an A3, when the opportunity arose to get one for free - well BIK anyway. I took it.

Never, never again - on the back of a tow truck 4 times !! Each for a different fault - all in 1 year. This was a '03 car, got rid after 12 months - got a 10yr old M3, so far so good.

Would love an old '80's shape 900 vert & Audi Quattro Turbo - hope they live up to their reputations - so I'm not adding to this list of being underwhelmed in another 12 months.

Bought a E36 coupe in feb this year. It was a 96 car and I brought it in from England. Car was perfect but absolutely gutless....no horses under the bonnet...in fact I couldn't find them anywhere in the car! My previous Opel Astra 1.4 was a 100 times better. Got rid of the car after only a few weeks and replaced it with an E30 and I haven't looked back since. And the E30 has got character to boot!

My most disappointing car would have to be an E46 318ci automatic. It had 118hp and weighed around 1500kg, and took more than 12 seconds to climb to 60mph-Awful. It looked great, it handled pretty well, but had the same power as a lawnmower.

the car i had previous to "christine" was a 1.0L nissan micra automatic, electric windows junked out as i tried to force them down while iced up, radio died, rear passenger window no go but it was a nippy litle thing hated it with a passion - first car.

had one of the new noddy shaped ones when i got home from hols as christine was being written off and by god it was horrible the old one was 10 times better, felt more robust than the noddy mobile.

But if we are talking most disapointing new cars then Im sorry to say its the new 318. I had one from Jow Duffy when they were sorting my car. All I can compair it to was the Opel Astra. It just didnt feel like a 50K car. maybe a 6 cylinder 320 might feel better but I was really disapointed. Infact I genuinly would not swap my 4year old 5 for a new 3.... unless I could sell it to make a proffit.

1st car = Honda Integra 1.5, the pop-up light 5dr one. Loved it (can anyone not love their 1st car?). I'd so much nookie back then...

2nd car = Mazda 323F 1.5, the cool looking one. Loved this as much. great handling, lovely to look at and sit in.

3rd car = Xsara VTR. Got this for good money with only 20k up on it after 3yrs, and sold it 7 months & 14k later for profit. Loved this too, partic the handling which was so fluid and mobile at the rear without being dangerous.

4th car = Bought my 1st gaff, & used Xsara toward it. Hence E34 518i bought for 635, driven for 18months & 31k, and sold for 635. Loved this to bits. Intro to RWD, and it was plenty lively.

5th car = E34 525i. Also loved this to bits.

6th car = E36 328i. A slow burner this, after the E34s. But once I set it up the way I wanted, it was right up there at the top. I still miss it some days.

7th car = E36 M3. Probably the disappointing one out of the lot. Can't put my finger quite on it, as it does everything great. But it just doesn't interest me like the others did for some reason. Maybe it's just too good?

8th.... M-Coupe I think!

I have a load of cars that I wanna get. M-Coupe, E46 M3, 993 C2 (on 16s!), Clio V6, Elise, caterham...... not to mention a late 80's S-Class, Opel Monza, various Maseratis (Q'porte or Ghibli being top of the list), Lancia Fulvia, Alfa GTV6 (old inboard brakes one), Citroen CX Turbo, Saab 900 Turbo 16, Citroen C6, Peugeot 505 GTi, Fiat Strada 130TC, Lotus Sunbeam..... I could go on for the day.

So many cars, so little money.

In theory that was an advantage. A tried and tested chassis, GM running gear and Saab build quality.

Package just didn't add up in practice.

I believe the Viggen was also a bit of a dissapointment, apparently you couldn't put the power down in it. Heard it described as dangerous.

My nomination for disappointing car has to be a '95 Honda Accord 2.0 LSi Coupe.

Traded my Civic Coupe in against it (fantastic car!), and it didn't feel nearly as lively from the get go.  Also felt like a barge on the road compared to the civic.  Gearbox was always iffy, and trim kept falling off.  It's biggest plus was cruise control.

Seeing as a touch of nostalgia is creeping in...

First car was a '82 Fiat Ritmo 105tc (in 1988) - a Escort XR3 equivalent at the time for half the money.  The sound of the twin cam engines from this era of Fiat was fantastic, it was black and had alloys, sports seats and spoilers and there was very little chance of parking next to another (obviously they weren't the popular choice of the time!).  The reg was 105 OZU, somewhat appropriate.

It could also qualify for the most disappointing because one of the chassis legs cracked and required some delicate welding - a Ritmo weak point.
