I have a 2002 530i sport. On hot days when the air is running and I sit at a stop light or in traffic for a extended pioiod of time. The car will bog and quit running when I step on the excellerator. The dash print out says system failure. I pull over and restart the car and it runs fine. Any ideas?

Had a similar thing with my 540 sport had it diagnostic checked showing crank sensor fault, only done it a couple of times so not done anything about it yet, had similar from a MAF fault on an Imprezza turbo years ago, worth a try?

Dunno about E39s or system failure faults, but one spurious cause of CPS faults is the front pulley vibration damper.  If the rubber starts to fail then it goes eccentric and throws the sensor.

Funny you should mention that my e39 has a bush split on a steering
arm which creates a clunk on braking, has been a prelude to mine not
starting and a crank sensor fault?....

Getting that with mine, the trip, mpg and avg speed reset and the radio clock will reset.

Any ideas?
