You are spot on there, but I would decant the refrigerant from the system,  into a cylinder to find out what it is, the gauges are very accurate, or at least I hope so!

Agreed, but that is still a lot of work to do for an automotive ac guy to do just to ensure that his refrigerant stays pure and I would argue that most of them wouldn't bother for a £50 job, seen recharges for as low as £10, no vacuum pump, no comeback.

If you are changing the oil, drier and TXV, then why not just use R134a? After all flushing the lube is the biggest part of the job, I really hate it, especially if the compressor is in an awkward place. R413a does work well with mineral oil, but with very old cars there may be a problem with the dessicant breaking down so a new drier at least.
