Thoughts are as follows :
- eMail field needs to be voluntary - discount field is too restrictive. Needs to be able to cope with 7.5% or variable or free chamois with every valet, etc... Free text field? - category field is too restrictive. Dealers for example fall under all of the current categories beginning with 'BMW'. Perhaps Checkboxes would be more appropriate here? - Contacts home does not reflect the true number of entries in the subsections (perhaps it's reflecting 'approved' entries?) - When displaying a list of entries, the description field shows the last 'XX' characters. This looks wierd. How about either a full entry or the first 'XX' characters. - Don't know if you've not enable it yet, but I didn't get an eMail when submitting test entries.
Concept looks sound tho - particularly the 'leave a comment' facility. Any joy on perhaps using forum user names rather than eMail? Some users still prefer to protect their eMail addresses...
Looking forward to it going live.
Cheers,

- I think the email field should be part of it - the email addy will not be used for anything other than verification. This is stated clearly in the 'all new' terms & conditions page. - I'll modify the discount box somehow to take other options into account. - I had an 'All' category which should umbrella all categories - maybe if I redefined it somewhat (General?) - contacts home ( default.asp) shows any listings that have been verified. I reckoned that there was no point in showing counting entries that have not (& may never be) verified. - the page list.asp is now corrected - I used the incorrect code RTrim instead of LTrim and got the 50 characters on the wrong side of the description. - you answered the last one yourself. Whilst testing the application, I received emails to my account within about a minute.
Is the leave a comment better than a simple voting system? The comment route does open the system to slandarous comments (the system does send an email to the admin whenever a new listing / comment is entered)

I think the comments are worthwhile - perhaps set them so that they are moderated before publication? I've seen this work very well on a board with WAY more slander potential than this one.
Clarifications :
1) I meant the eMail address should be voluntary on the company entry as some companies still do not have eMail addresses.
2) I had expected an eMail when I submitted a company entry. Is this not correct?
Any sign of that wean yet?

Duncan, 1) I hear you but if the companies email address was voluntary how would the listing be verified as being cosher? 2) I completed a local test and it worked fine (done locally as the internet connection here is brutal - my 20 students and myself all sharing a poxy 64k connection)
With regard to the leanbh (Irish, pron. lan-iv), we ended up having to go to the hosipddle this morning @ 4am (the wife was having a bit of bother). Bother turned out to be nothing but they became concerned with something else and have decided to induce her so the wean should be out tomorrow or Thursday. Meanwhile Im @ work & knackered!

Regarding (1) looks like I misunderstood I thought us members were going to add suppliers we KNEW gave discounts to the contact list. Which means Henry Brothers are probably a little confused right now having received an eMail generated by me... Which therefore also explains (2)
Send the students home and go and get some sleep now while you can! There'll be none for you for the next few weeks.

You may be correct though - entries could be moderated but there is nothing to stop someone saying that BMW are giving a 50% discount on all used cars (or whatever) and there is no real way of checking this without ringing them. Also having all listings & comments being moderated by ourselves before being displayed possibly puts more onus on the club to get things right.
However, I will add another field to the database which will be the email addy of the listing / comment author. The verification email will be sent here. Therefore I could leave the company email as a non-required field. ( horray to me).

It looks good Killian, this is almost the recomended thingy I wanted/suggested.
I have some questions though !!!
This seems to be for companys to list themselves, would it be possible for members to nominate the little people, those who do servicing, interior, body repairs etc and have in the members opinion supplied a very good value for money service ?
As Duncan pointed out earlier, some of these wont have e-mail addresses, web sites etc, but the id of the member recomending them should be perhaps displayed, and possibly the reasons the member wants them included ?

Killian, if endorsements of various services are made, does that not lay the BMW Car Club open to all sorts of litigation.WE need a crystal CLEAR Dis-Claimer on EVERYTHING that could be seen as a recommendation , in any way.Advising Club members of discounts is one thing, listing everything else is without a warning is unacceptable. We need legal advice!!!!!!!!!!

Disclaimers legally aren't worth the paper they're printed on / file they're saved in
AIUI If users of this board are making factual recommendations and comments based on their own experiences then we do not have a problem. Where we could run into bother is where Member A says :
"Joe Bloggs parts and servicing are cr@p!"
Where either :
a) Member A has no proof
or
b) Member A is making it up.
By comparison, Member B saying :
"I was very disappointed by the service from Joe Bloggs parts and servicing. It took them 4 weeks to change my air filter and cost me £300."
Is perfectly acceptable as long as it is factually correct.

Ok guys, if it causes this many problems maybe it wasnt such a good idea as I thought !!
It seems such a shame though, all this dam legal stuff.
If you lived in the same area and said garage "a" gave a good service because.... etc, that I would have thought is what the club is partially about.
