The 6 speed is notorious for giving trouble.

Yup... v true. VW have a lot to answer for in terms of the quality of
components and build in some of their more recent cars. That six speed
is a prime example. They are not the firm rock of reliability they once
were.

Lads - you're making me nervous here. Have to say I had a 90bhp
1999 Passat and she never missed a beat - put 90k miles on her in just
over two years.
That was partly why I went for the older model also as I know a few people with the newre 130's Golf and Passat and they seem to have had problems for varying rerasons. Anyway - if the M sells I'll replace it with an E30 318is for trackday thrills and spills so that should keep my sanity intact. |

Got to agree there, it shouldn't happen at that kind of mileage or on a car that age. It never ceases to amaze me in car mag long term tests, etc. how often they encounter mechanical breakdowns and failures with new or near new cars. I wouldn't tolerate those levels of unreliability in my cars, never mind new cars that you've paid through the nose for. The youngest car I've ever bought was 5 years old and the oldest was 14 years old when sold. The only car that ever left me on the side of the road (in close to 300k miles of driving over the past 12/13 years) was a mk2 Golf GTI back in the mid 90's. Hopefully I'm not tempting fate! Martin, sorry for the o/t! |

I thought the car had to be 25 years old before it's eligible for classic insurance, might get one myself if this is not the case |

I think its 25 for the vintage tax, mate has his 86 Porsche 944 turbo insured under classic no probs, think he's only paying 800 or so quid fully comp. its tempting , must have another car though and its limited mileage, but worth it i think... carroll Nash are one of the co.'s that do it as far a i know.

Carole Nash "recognise any car registered in 1983 or before as a classic".
Classic motor tax begins when the car hits 30 years. |

I knew I should have maid my point more clearly, that someone would pick that up! I was going to go back and edit my post to say that "Not that I have an M3 but I hate using it for work too" but didn't bother. Every day's a school day! |
