so far.

over the last few wks I've noticed condensation on the inside of windows so quickly realised water's coming in from somewhere.

started off with new front door seals last wk then yesterday while at my mates garage we run a hose over the most likely areas but nothing.

I decided today to strip carpets out of car and dry them out, a necessary evil but my god I wish I'd paid someone to do it for me.

the carpet itself comes in 2, a rear section and the front section which goes over the tunnel. so once you've removed the seats & console you would have to strip out all of the heating which has been fitted after the carpets.

this proved a bridge to far for me so I've cut the front section in half so as to remove without having to strip anything else out.

btw the foam on the underside is soaking wet along the outside edges but seems relatively dry in the centre.

tomorrow I'll be removing the door cards to check the membranes and repair if required, fit the rear door seals and refit the seats so that the car can be used because I think it'll take a while to dry the carpets out

Stevie I've the same problem in my M3 so if you manage to get the car back in one piece then I'll drop my car off for you to sort mine out.
In fact, my last M3 had wet carpet too...
Maybe were just drinking too many beers and not noticing were pissing ourselves. ha ha

Good luck getting it all back together Stevie!!

Stevie

I am 99.9% certain that your problem will be a broken door membrane - I had the same issue 3 times in my last E46.  Even after fitting a new membrane the last time the water was still getting in through the door card clips and they had to be sealed as well.

Hope you find the problem

Cheers

Col

Not good mate, hope you find the problem soon.

I know what a PITA swapping carpets can be, did it with my e30 touring which is probably a lot easier than the newer E39.

I had this problem, it was leaking seals on the heater matrix, but being an e39 with air con, i dont know if it has a heater matrix. Is it wet both sides of the tunnel or just passenger side?

Its not the heater is it? How's the coolant level?

I thought you had had your car nicked when I read the title.

Good luck with it.

Andrew

coolant level is fine, the underside of the carpets are wet along the outer edges which points to damaged membranes/doorcards or sunroof drains bunged up, no puddles in floorwells just condensation, me hopes I've caught it early.

had to put seats back in car just now we'll look at it again this wkend

btw I changed the title too many folk thought it was something serious

the carpets are still out to this day, so that's been best part of 2 months.

there hasn't been a trace of water anywhere and that's after all the bad weather we've been having too.

the only thing that i did was to change the 2 front door seals.

I just need to get my lazy ar5e into gear and put the car back together again
