    Posted: 20-August-2004 at 09:46

Hi everyone. I've just bought a 5 year old 5-Series and it is missing the CD interchanger cartridge. I'm sure I'd be able to pick one of these up from a main BMW dealer no problem, but does anyone know of any other stockist of this part?

Many thanks, Rich.

I know that in some of the E39's the stereo system is made by Alpine and the higher end systems are manufactured by Becker...Perhaps you could visit a local Car Stereo specialist to see if you can pick a cartridge up a bit cheaper than a main dealer.

I've just made enquiries about this too.

My 98 523i SE which I bought on Monday night has an empty space in the boot where the previous owner horsed out his 6 CD changer just before he traded it in.  Wasn't original equipment so on day 1 the previous owner had it installed, I have the receipt for it fitted and it was £420 on the 1st of August 98 with 15 miles on the clock recorded on the sales invoice!

Went to Halfords and spoke to some spotty oik who was more interested in selling me a complete CD changer and boy racer garish looking head unit for the same price as £420 for the Beamer part above.

You can buy a Sony 6 CD changer for £150 from Halfords at the mo and then you will need a "mess box" (spotty oik speak for an adapter that converts BMW radio speak into Sony CD speak) which will need to be installed behind your dash and then trail wires down the side of the car to the space in the boot.  This makes the original wiring loom redundant.

This "mess box" is another 50 quid which means you qualify for free fitting which is done by the AA at Halfords otherwise its £80 to have one fitted at Halfords.

Probably better options out there.

Are you looking for the whole six stack unit that goes in the boot or just the cartridge that you put your CDs in to go in the machine?

For the whole six stack unit keep looking on ebay or check out the spares page on:

http://www.bmwcarshowroom.com/

If it is just the cartridge that you put the disks in I may have a brand new one at a discount to the dealer. I brought two extra when I got my new car and have never used one of them.
