I got my car alarm working last night by putting one of the loose cables from the alarm in to the fuse box (going in from the top). I put the wire into fuse number 25 - the spare one, and then pushed in a 40 amp beside it. Everything is working fine but I am a bit concerned on how safe this is to do. How easy is it to wire this fuse properly into the unit? Is the amperage of the fuse ok?

Anyone replies grealty appreciated

Geoff

My car alarm runs with 15A or 20A fuses as far as I recall. 40AMPs is very large. I would be concerned about using such a high ampage fuse.

Are you trying to wire the alarm into a permenant live 12V source?
You could do this by connecting via a suitably rated in-line fuse to the battery +ve terminal.

Hello Geoff,

Everyone is doing fine, thanks. Baby is very good, which makes it easier for me to get away to Mondello in October. Hope to see you there.

Regarding your alarm, there might have been a reason for the alarm being disconnected. If you try a reasonably rated fuse, and it keeps blowing you'll know there is something up. With a larger rated fuse, you could end up with melted wires before the fuse goes! Have a look at the fuse descriptions in the owners handbook to see what rating to use, or post on the general or 3-series techincal forums, you will get better feedback there. Rating should be fairly low, as an alarm shouldn't draw much current.

Regards,
Kevin.
