Had my car (1981 E12 M535i) in the garage for the past week for some bits and bobs, mainly sorting out the overheating problem. Spoke to my mechanic this morning and he told me the viscous fan for cooling is not working correctly (not spinning at the right speed I guess), I think he mentioned the bearings or something, I have no idea whatsoever about the viscous fan system, all my previous cars have had electric fan systems, are parts of it available separately or is it all one unit? Which parts will I need to replace and are they expensive?

Hi Pete

From other posts I have read it sounds like your viscous fan coupling has gone , basically the fan spins all the time then when the engine starts to get too warm a clutch kicks in and speeds the fan up to cool the engine down . Apparently if you roll a paper up and try to stick it between the blades when the engine is running,  and it stops the fan then the coupling has gone ...This was replaced on my E34 a couple of years ago and looking at the reciept cost about £50 for the part (from and independant specialist)
I could be wrong on this and would advise waiting for feedback from other users because it could be different on the E12  but you should be able to source the part from GSF Car Parts

£75 ?   Take it back !

ECP do them for as little as £22.75. I Have had one on My E28 528i for the last 5 years with no problems at all,
great quality !
