I have been reliably informed by Haynes that they will be producing a manual for the E39 which will be published in Spring 2005.

We will wait and see if it is any good!

I'm inclined to believe you Miles.

On the last car forum I was a member of (Vx Senators) the Haynes manual for that car was referred to as the Haynes Book of Parodies, the Haynes Book of Laughter, the Haynes Comic book etc.

Why don't they call them Owners Workshop Manuals anymore?

I have bought the Haynes manual for the E46 as it covers my engine, but I have noticed loads of non technical errors in it, like sentences not making sense, grammar, etc,  I can't comment on the technical side of things as I don't have an E46 that I can take a socket set too well or one that the owner would let me!

The Bentley E39 Service Manual is your best bet.

I have the Bentley E39 Manual - it comes in two volumes.

The emphasis appears to be on the American market cars.  I haven't had cause to use the wiring diagrams yet but I recall reading somewhere that these diagrams are not accurate for UK market cars.

Edit:  Still well worth getting though.

You can also get the BMW ETK and TIS on CD.  This complements the Bentley manual nicely.

ETK is the parts catalogue (with drawings) for various models from E28 to E66 plus a few more.  TIS provides service and repair instructions, also for various models.

Do a search for "BMW ETK" on eBay or Google.  Make sure the CD includes the TIS.
