What a load of crap! Why choose to hold a car free day at this time of year - why not summertime when it is more likely to be a nice day and the schools are off? Management in Dublin bus neet lobotomies if they think that a good incentive to get people out of their cars would be to give free travel between 10am & 4pm. (apparently they are giving away 20,000 1-way tickets but not really announcing where to get them!). Why on earth would I give up my car with all its comforts to sit beside some stranger on the bus (after waiting an eternity in this rain) or get the sub-3rd-world train (after waiting an eternity in this rain)? Apparently there is a (minimal) website for this rubbish (somehow I don't think the photo of the kids playing at the launch of car free day today was taken in todays weather!). |

We got a mail from the grown-ups at work suggesting we support this crap too.... There is no viable public transport to get me from where I live to where I work even though it's only five miles. Those that have ever tried cycling the Lucan - Newcastle road know that it's not an option unless you're a member of exit and I already car pool so leave me to live my life as I choose! |

Should the kids in the picture not be standing at a bus stop or somethin? Car free day and yet the first kid has a steering wheel.
I have to agree Killian, the whole thing is a farce.I heard nothin until this mornin either.Nothin will get me out of my car....not when I'm paying over €800 a year to use these po*y roads Richie |

But Richie, according to the website.... You could save some money – running a car in Ireland is an expensive business. Using your car less often can save you money. Some transport options such as walking won’t cost you anything at all! Surely the more miles you do the better value you're extortionate road tax is?? |

The Universal answer to ALL the road problems. This Solution is never suggested by the persons who live 20+ miles out of town, and not needing to criss cross an area, to earn a crust.City centre travel , with Bus/Train every 15 Mins ok, I would give a go. Let those Great minds who live out in the sticks, set the example by going carless, and maybe others working at a fixed location may consider it,,BUT--Show us how easy it is. |

Alot of people in Galway seem to think its a load of ribbish, traffic in from Moycullen just as heavy as any other weekday. I have to bring my two kids to school in Galway city, what do they expect me to do? Make them walk 1.5 miles to the village with their heavy schoolbags, queue for ages for the only bus and then walk to the school when we get to town in the rain?
I don't think so. When we have a proper public transport system then maybe... |

I have had the pleasure of four years living and working in Singapore, most likely the most expensive place to own a car in the world. Due to their size and wealth they have fixed the number of cars on their tiny island and that number is only ever increased to reflect an increase in the road space available. I was lucky enough to have access to a company car but rarely used it because the buses, trains & taxis were clean, cheap and always on schedule. Here you need a mortgage to take a cab, the buses are not sufficiently reliable to plan a trip by and apparently the train company are getting there.... When you have a viable relaible affordable transport network, people (even me) will use it, until such time leave us alone. If you have a viable transport system |

Treat it like no smoking day. Ignore the lot of em !! Latest "brilliant" idea over here, is the greenies want us to pay 10p per mile on top of what we already pay |

Some pubs in the West of Ireland tried to ignore the smoking ban. The health boards and govt. came down heavy on them basically giving them a deadline to ensure that nobody was smoking or they would basically lose their licence. The pub owners gave in. In fairness, Im all for it. The pub owners came out with various arguments saying that fag smoke doesn't kill, etc. They claimed that nobody would go to pubs if the ban was enforced. They were wrong. Apparently their profits are down on previous years but they don't believe that it is due to people not willing to pay the extortionate prices they are now charging! |

In my opinion,if the pubs want to increase business, they should shave off some of their 300% profit that they have on booze and that may entice people back in.Robbin shower of *******.

There is some pub owner in Wexford (I think) who is knocking about €0.80 or so off the price of a pint. He is making more money now with the cheaper booze than when he had the high prices!
