Topic: 1987 635CSi D49 VMB Silver Posted: 28-September-2004 at 18:35 |
Hello,
I'm new to the group and new to the world of 6er's having bought one last night. :o)
I'm trying to find out some history about the car as it only came with
an (expired) MoT certificate and the V5. But, in the windscreen there
was a "BMW Car Club" sticker, so *hopefully* it's known to someone here.
Here's a picture of it:
It's in fairly poor condition at the moment, but depending on how the MoT goes I'll see how much funds I have left to fix that.
So, was this your car once? Do you know who owned it? Any info at all
would be interesting. Apparently it has recently had a new (recon most
likely) auto box and torque converter. There was also some talk of
suspension work, but the seller wasn't too knowledgable about the car,
so I don't know. The car's done about 127k miles. It's currently with a
BMW specialist in High Wycombe, so wish me luck for the MoT! :)
Regards,
Jules.

Hi,
I'm afraid the picture is a bit deceptive... :( Both front wings are
shot and the rear arches are bubbling on both sides. The n/s/f inner
wing is going to need some welding too. But other than that, it's
pretty sound.
Hopefully it won't give my wallet too much of a hammering going through the MoT.
The car was last services at "Elland Tyre & Exhausts" on 3/10/2002.
Regards,
Jules.

the specialist it's with has a 6er he's breaking and the wings are in
salvageable condition on it. the rear's haven't gone too far, so i'll
probably do them myself. i got the car for a song, so i don't mind
spending a bit of ca$h on it. but not too much... i've fallen into that
trap before. ;)
thanks for welcoming me to the board.

I have sent Jules full details of its life as my wife's shopping car. Hope its new owner has as much fun with it as she had. Now she has to drive an E30 320i, she is in less danger of getting caught in a speed trap.

I was wondering where I'd seen it...

A quick update on the car...
Firstly, thank you very much for the info Howard, it expands a great
deal on the info the PO gave me. He didn't mention what was done to the
rear suspension, only that it had some suspension work done.
As I said above, the car's away being MoT'd at the moment. The
preliminary findings are pretty good considering how little I bought
the car for:
rusted inner n/s/f wheel arch, next to battery
shot o/s track rod end
minor electrical fault causing the n/s tail & side light not to work
smashed front number plate
brakes badly in need of bleeding
There's also a bit of rust on the o/s sill that's going to be corrected
and both front wings being replaced with ones from a donor car.
Hopefully I'll have the car back next w/end.
Kevin, thanks for the invite. Hopefully I'll have the car back by then.
:) I have a couple of friends with E32's that I'll try and convince to
come along too. :)
Thanx,
Jules.

Just had an update from the garage. The ETA has slipped by a week as a
couple of the bushes for the steering column are coming from BMW and
are going to take a while to order... :( But other than that, there are
no nasty surprises and is looking good for being on budget.
:)
Thanx,
Jules.

hi
i just got the car back last night! :)
one big problem though... when i bought the car it had no battery. the
po had disposed of it when it went flat. i took along an old spare one
i happened to have. however it was from a porsche 924 and it's
just not up to the job to cranking a big six. i need to get to my extra
cheap motor factors before 2pm if i want to get a new battery today,
the problem is i don't know what capacity (Ah) it should have!
i have no handbook for the car and all the google bmw web site searches i do only return info in the si batteries... :(
can anyone help??
thanks!
jules.

Halfords generally have a full specification/application list.
I would have thought that a motor factors would be able to look up the correct spec as the physical size can be just as important as the capacity.

Didn't stop a spotty Herbert at Halfords once selling me the wrong physical size battery for my E32.

just got back from buying a new battery.
thank you very much everyone who answered.
as it turned out, they had the 1987 635CSi listed. i didn't hold out
much hope as last time i was there i was buying a battery for a
friend's 7er and they do not list any e32's! it go's from 1st gen 7er
(e27?) to e38 with nothing in between. however the price and that they
always have about 7 or 8 of each type of battery on the shelf fully
charged keeps me coming back. but mainly the price. :)
i got a bosch silver
7e battery for Ł36.99 +VAT. it's a 73Ah battery. the battery for an m6
was only Ł2 more expensive and was 90Ah, but was significantly (at
least to my eye) longer so i wasn't sure if it would fit in the battery
tray.
thanks again for your quick responses, it was most appreciated.
jules.
