Hi,
I'm new to the forum and to BMW ownership, having just bought an '81 316 Auto. Anyone got any advice on where in Ireland I can source parts for these cars? I'm anxious to pick up some new headlamps and one or two other bits and pieces. Any info would be gratefully received. |

Have a look at the Irish Region contacts. Many of these will probably be able to source parts for you. |

Thanks for that. I'll start making enquiries! Anyone else driving an E21?

Does restoring the bodywork of a 318 and upgrading it to use as a trackday car count? Nick Croft'05 |

That'll do!
There aren't too many left so any car that's saved is fine by me, even if it is upgraded or tweaked. Having driven mine for the past 6 months I think they're a very underrated car. Saying that, I haven't driven any other model (bar a very scruffy E30 that wasn't worth the money being asked). |

Underated.. nah!
..they ARE crap! Heavier and slower than the car it replaced.. rustier than a BMW should be.. and well in need of retirement when the E30 came along.. no wonder it is the forgotten BMW. Still they do have their good points.. it is still a BMW and one with plenty of character at that. If you like tail happy handling then you have come to the right place.. even with the slushbox, oversteer is just the next corner away. If you can fix the bodyrot(hard) and then attend to the handling (easy) uprate the power (moderate) then you have the makings of a classic.. what a buzz you will get when you outdrive (which you will) all the modern stuff that is out there. One of the lads over here has a real peachy 316, but can't remember his name....

If memory serves correctly it was the very pale gold, but then as I can't even remember his name..... Theres also a funky orange one that was at the first mondello track day. Kinda tempted to look for a 323i as my first restoration project any advice? |

Dont go for a Jag!!!, Ive single handedly stripped and rebuilt/converted to RHD,from auto to manual etc a Volvo 240 coupe which was no easy task but a jag forget it as a first project, i bought a 77 xj6 coupe last year to restore, i thought yes this will be a lovely car, old so handy enough to do, not the case, i ended up selling it as i wasnt able to do it myslef and it would be too expensive to get it restored by a professional, By all means if you have a huge budget and a want a really flash car get an e-type but if you plan on restoring it yourself in a one-man band single garage effort try something a little more simplistic, Id go for the 323, you could always sell it when its done and buy a scruffy e-type to restore??? |

Hi Guvnor, I have an original Irish E21 316 in mint condition with 45k miles on it. I am active in the classic section of the club, you just missed our meet last night. There are others in our group with E21's. Let me know what kind of parts you need as there are some guys with spares. The E21 is a next great classic which needs to be preserved, so keep up the good work. |

You thinking of the yellow one here? IIRC it belonged to a Galen Auchmuty and was an 1980 316 |

Thanks for that Andy. It wasn't you I met at the Celbridge show back in
April with a 316 was it? The car I was looking at was an ex-judges car that had a low mileage. If it was you, I chatted to you for about 15 minutes about the BMW and said I was thinking of buying one. I had a Triumph 1300 with me at the show. |

I was at the celbridge show alright, but in a 2000 touring. The E21 was with its former owner Marty. I think Derek you met Marty at his friends place in Newcastle earlier in the year too.
