Little idea that came to me....

Have teams of 4 or 5 cars from each region drive 100 miles of their region's coast road, hand over a baton to the next team who continue around the coast.  BMW dealerships with fuel can be invited to donate fuel etc for the trip and ferry companies, who I know are very helpful in things like this, could be invited to donate ferry crossings.  The drivers and cars can be dressed up in fancy dress to add a bit of fun.

The Club can raise money for charity doing this relay.  Whether it be for one charity or for many, makes no odds.

The entire coastline of the UK and Ireland can be covered quite easily.  Probably best time to do something like this would be in the Spring when the weather isn't so bad and the sun is higher too.

Logistics sound scary but really aren't too bad, each area of the country, inc Ireland, would be represented and as many cars could take part as wanted.  Relay would finish at starting point, perhaps London Bridge, and a large get together and party to finish with.

What you lot think?

Do blondes that dye their hair become brighter?

In Ally's case 3 times as bright?

...only joking Ally, great idea.

The midlanders can choose a coastal region to drive along Nigel, you get to use the imagination

You could even be one of the team on the Irish Sea ferry crossings

Rough idea on region splits....

South Eastern, South Central, South West, South Wales, Irish Sea Ferry, Southern Ireland, Northern Ireland, Irish Sea Ferry rtn, Mid Wales, North Wales/Anglesey, North West, Western Scotland, Northern Scotland, Eastern Scotland, North East, East Coast, East Anglia and back to South Eastern above Thames, start/finish London Bridge.

Each area would be split into 100 or 150 mile coastal stretches.  Irish ferry crossings would start/finish at same ports so that entire coast of Ireland and Wales can be involved.  Those from the inland areas could choose an area that would be withing reasonable reach to them.

Actually it was something that Killian found on Scoobynet that got me thinking.  The story of the youngster who always wanted to have a ride in a Scooby in Holland, so the Dutch Owners Club got together and had a full size meet in the lad's neighbourhood.  Killian happened to mention how good it would be for this club to do something similar that involved as many members as possible.  There would probably have to be a minimum of 100 drivers/cars to do the coastal runs through the approx 18 areas.  Best time of year would be late Spring/early Summer 2005 maybe.  If the minimum number of members come forward, then the dealerships in coastal towns/cities can be contacted and the ferry firms also.  Along with any suggested charities, media companies and other corporate sponsors.  The event will also need at least 32 marshalls at the handover points and perhaps regional marshalls along the way too.  Have a well known telly or sporting personality to set the relay off too.

All ideas for how to go about this are welcomed.

I am in

So it would be a case of North scotland

down to south scotland

Down to border

And on and on

Would everyone then continue on the journeys end?

if people don't continue to journeys end then the "big party at the finish" will just be for the londoners as they are the ones who'll start and finish.... :-/

the north-east is okay, but north-west of elgin is a bit sp****ly populated with members (i.e. none!), so we'd have to chip in a bit and do more than our fair share to get round the coast to come back down and hand the baton to the next team

don't want to put the mockers on this, its a logistical challenge, doo-able, but would take a lot of planning, for some regions more than others

I doubt that would be practicable Pete, although a nice idea.

Imagine the fuel costs, amount of space needed on ferries etc, although it would be nice for as many as possible to meet up at the start and finish.

Anyway, I suppose we should keep all comments on the original thread, so I'll close this one, to try and encourage that.

Best Wishes

Nigel

Obviously the logistics of getting everyone to the finish point, wherever that may be, would be horrendous, so local regions could have their own celebratory parties covered by their regional media companies etc, perhaps at the largest BMW dealership in their particular region.

Terry <gently aqueezes knee> Wogan..
Now theres a thought, the old togmeister on radio 2, boring the nation with his wit (and maybe playing half a record in between.. lol)

Then again... I listen to him, what am I saying...

Sounds like a good idea, lots of tv coverage.. etc..

Good publicity for BMW drivers, since we always get bad press from others as being the most inconsiderate drivers in the world.

Not a bad idea for children in need, but they do get a lot of help already, how about something a little closer to home that doesnt get as much press.

Macmillan cancer nurses, marie curie cancer nurses, cancer relief etc.

I have witnessed Marie Curie staff in action, they nursed my uncle through his final months, wonderful people, the word angels springs to mind.

My cousins neighbour works on the top gear team, if this gets going I can ask them if anyone would be willing to help us.

Best Wishes

Great idea Niggles.

Some members may well have charities that are close to their heart for personal reasons, so they too can be included in this.  And if the 2005 one comes off, then it can become an annual event.
