Topic: Lights on warning buzzer Posted: 09-November-2004 at 08:35 |
E30 318 (1990) Nearly been caught out a couple of times by accidentally leaving my lights on. I have been searching to try an fit a diagram/plan of how I might retrofit a buzzer to sound when the lights are left on and the door is open. Anybody done this before and can point me in the right direction that would be great!

The ETK shows a retrofit item is available from the dealer, p/N 82.93.9.401.607.

Quick cheap and dirty way to this is to get a small 12V piezio (sp?) buzzer from Maplins/etc, wire one end to the back of the light switch (pick either side or dipped by your choice) which goes live when you trn the lights on, and the other end to your driver's door switch which goes to earth when door opened. It may be worth putting a diode in-line as well to stop it corrupting the various courtesy light delay bits etc. Then, every time you open the driver's door with the lights on, the buzzer goes off. You could get clever and wire in a relay so it only happens with the igntion off, but by then you may as well get the BMW bit.
BTW, why, when they manage a lovely melodious "bong" for all the other warnings from the OBC etc, does the lights-on go "NAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH" like a 30 year old Ford?!
cheers

Hmmm, the E34 "lights on" warning is the melodious "bong" with the helpful wording of "LIGHTS ON" on the dash display.
The E30 is even more subtle, silent even. If the BMW retrofit sounds like a Ford warning I won't fit it, I hate that sound in a way I cannot describe.

It's not complicated. I did it to my 325 ages ago, and then the M3, and I've just done it (Saturday) to the 318is.
The buzzer cost me 99p, and all you then need is some cable, a couple of 'scotch clips' and 1/2hr of time.
An easier way, rather than messing about behind the light switch for a live when on, is to pick the feed to the bulb on the hazard switch, and then - as above - use the earth to the door switch.
I've never had any trouble with it, with the E30's there's no delay or anything, and it's only live when the lights are on, so there is no drain on the battery.
Simple huh?

Yeah I got well scared the first time I heard the OBC go "Bong", t'was driving my E39 home on the M8 from a transmission specialist and was trying to compose myself after suffering major open wallet surgery, sprayed the windscreen washers, few seconds later touched the brakes as I was approaching traffic and this thing went "Bong" and of course I thought it was something to do with the brakes as I had just pressed the pedal before she went 'Bong' or worse still the tranny which had just been fixed. I never new it made that noise, all other cars just light up these things. How relieved was I when all it was low washer fluid.
The lights on warning is a bit co**** isn't!

Kevin - I'm not promising it's the same as a Ford's one, I've no idea what they sound like really, that was just the worst image I could come up with. It is, however, 'orrible.
Does have the one advantage that you soon learn to turn off the lights ASAP to avoid it so you will NEVER leave them on.....
