CAN ANYONE HELP? I HAVE A E46 COUPE AND HAVE A NEW BABY DUE IN 3 WEEKS.THE PROBLEM IS THAT I TOOK MY CAR INTO MY LOCAL DEALER TO HAVE THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAGS SWITCHED OFF SO THAT I CAN FIT THE BABY SEAT ONTO THE PASSENGER SEAT AND WAS TOLD IT WILL COST ME 400 TO DO AS THEY HAVE TO FIT A DIFFERENT SEATBELT AND REPROGRAMME THE ECU SO THAT THE LIGHT GOES OUT. I ALSO OWN A E36 COUPE AND WAS TOLD THIS ONE WILL ALSO COST 400 TO DO THE SAME.

HAS ANYONE ELSE COME ACROSS THIS OR ARE THE DEALERS JUST TRYING TO FLEECE ME?

Whoa, stop shouting.. lol

Isn't there a fuse to turn off the airbags?
if not i would recomend putting the chair in the back, lot safer IMHO.

back seat is far safer apparently!

I searched the interweb and came up with the following:-
from http://forum.bmwcarmagazine.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=11533:-
"Sly, being a dad myself (my kid is 2 in july) i went through a similar thing with ford (saw the light and brought my wife a beemer as well!!) but a mechanic gave me some advice which stuck with me. The detonator for the airbag will remain in the car..........is it worth risking it. My advice is spend the money on a very good car seat and put your kid in the back. I brought two britax seats, one for my car and one for my wifes. The things recline and look bullet proof, better than spending 250 on disabling the bag IMHO."

Also turn off caps lock - caps on the net is regarded as shouting and many people are hungover on a monday morning!

Thanks for all your suggestions, I tried fitting the baby seat in the back but as it's a coupe its difficult for my wife to get in & out.I tried ringing a different dealer and they have quoted me 250 per car which is better but still steep. Why cant BMW have a switch to de-activate like most other manufactures.

I'll keep trying to find a cheaper way round this but if anyone else can help it would be greatly appreciated.

I know its hard work getting in the back of a coupe, but every manufacturer I know recommends putting the nipper seats in the back.

Worth asking yourself, is it worth compromising the wee ones safety just for the sake of a bit less stretching ... I know which one I'd choose.

Not having a go, at the end of the day, its entirely up to you, just think it makes more sense thats all.
