Hi there,

I wondered if anyone could help.

I have just bought an E36 M3 Evo and have noticed a rattling noise comming from the engine, but when I dip the clutch, the noise totally dissappears.

Any ideas?

The noise is worse when the engine is Hot.

Thanks Kris

Hi

Could be clutch release bearing??  Whereabouts are you based?

Andy.

Hi ya,

From what you say it definitely sounds like the clutch release bearing, although don’t take my word for it!

You need to get someone to operate the clutch whilst you try and pin point the origin of the noise. If it is the release bearing it should be quite easy to determine that the noise is coming from the front area of the gearbox housing. (This will mean you have to lay on the floor) If possible put one side of the car up on axle stands to make it easier for you to get under the box.

Let us know what you find.

Regards

Rory

I have the clutch release bearing noise (not too loud at all) in my M5 and it only happens when the clutch is depressed. It has been confirmed by my garage that it 's the release bearing but I've been told that when you replace it this the noise will return soon.

imho it can't be release bearing, so tend to follow nicks advice.

Hey Nick,
Thaks for that but what is a Lay Shaft (pornographic?) and what is involved in repair or replacement of this part and a price please. The noise is too annoying to leave.

Many Thanks

if its as noisy as you say go and get it checked out, but there is no fix for it unless you would like to buy a new gear box..........annoying I know, you see the six speed box was kind of an after thought lets try that sort of thing from BMW.

I take it the noise goes away when you depress the clutch pedal?? if not then its not the lay shaft............. if the problem was a thrust bearing/hydraulics system, this would make the clutch plate hard to disengage.

Take it to a BMW dealer, and let them have a look.but I will say that you may not get any action, as they will come out with the usual crap..........."there isnt anything wrong with it sir"

Hi ya,

Yes, the lay shaft is inherently noisy on evo's and does get worse the hotter it gets, although the problem with describing a noise with words is the different way people interpret it. The way it was described it sounded like there may be more to it? To me, all the evo's i have worked on, this noise at idle does not seem too bad, unless it turned out to be the bearing.

As Nick says, the gearbox’s do produce noise at idle, this can be confirmed as when you have this box on a bench you can spin the primary shaft by hand and hear the noise, although the plus side of this is they spin nice and freely which obviously reduces gearbox drag!

On my Evo, this noise did reduce when I changed the clutch release bearing and the effort ‘to clutch’ was also reduced.

I would suggest an independent assessment, like Nick said just to make sure it is nothing more than normal.

Just out of interest, what mileage does your car have on it?

Regards

Rory

Rory,

Mine has 49,000 on the clock which i dont think is bad for a 1997 car.

You said you changed a clutch release bearing on your car, did you change the whole box or just the bearing? If so what was the cost? The noise isnt just on Evo's, my mate has same prob on his 316i but its not as loud. Traffic driving and hard acceleration in 1st gear seems to bring this problem on quicker. But its never made a noise from cold. I did a 200 mile trip the other day and it was fine. And yestarday it made the noise after 20 mins of stop starts.

Clutch release bearings? LayShafting? Its all greek to me!

Hi,

I changed the complete clutch unit including the bearing on my car at 55000 miles. This may have something to do with the reduced clutch effort and interestingly the old bearing did not seem that worn even though there was a defiantly reduction in noise.

Without being able to hear the noise it is impossible to diagnose. What I would suggest is listening to as many evo's as you can, that way if they all sound like yours then it must be the inherent noise, either that or your choice of evo's was very unlucky! lol

If I get the chance I will record mine at idle, so we can all have a listen and compare. (I will also record the induction noise on the new intake i am working on!)

Mine is a 98 with 27,000 on the clock.

I am having a new clutch and release bearing fitted on 07.05.2003 so I will let you guys know then if it cured the noise.
