Just bought one with ~57k on seems to go alright, putting it on the dyno Saturday morning. Million dollar question: What'll the figure be? Andy |

Well I'm talking about rear wheel here, so I'm sure that would be optimistic. I'll start the bidding at 240... Prize? Clever dick of the day award? Andy

266bhp for me Just take about 18% from the flywheel figure. I got 164bhp @ wheels when it was std with sports airfilter, so with a 18% loss that equates to around 200bhp. |

Andy,
You're not Andrew Vickers by any chance are you ? If you are, you can do a direct comparison with mine... Trevor |

No sorry I'm not. I'll post the graph so you can all do a direct comparison. Well unless it's too limp of course in which case I'll claim there was some sort of technical fault posting it. Andy |

Oh dear. Well I had the run and all was not well. 220bhp at the flywheel... There was no investigation but the operator is suspicious of the mass air flow sensor and perhaps fuel filter. The torque curve seems good up to 3200rpm where it reaches 223.1 but after that it drops to 180 at 4000rpm, 160 at 6000. Any ideas? Andy

Thats awefull, Where are you based ? I would gladly take a look at the engine for you (free of course) and check if you have any faults. Does the car feel slow at all ? |

Can you feel the drop off when driving it? What did that correspond to at the wheels?

I'm based near Snetterton but visit Surrey weekly. You feel the torque falling off a bit after 3 but it feels strong enough up to that. It'll rev to 7+ and pull hardish on the upchange. Mechanically it's apparently sound -- no smoke, we have no compression figures though (yet) no faults logged, and all the parameters seemed reasonable (I'm told). The operator thought it was a sensor. I'll try and scan it all tomorrow. Interestingly the VANOS was replaced fairly recently, though no receipt appears in the service history (which is all main dealer). Anyone know if the cams can be timed wrong? The key seems to be very very poor fuelling. He nearly aborted the run because of it, but it started to pick up a little out of the dangerously weak zone. I'd like to know figures for air flow meter at ~750rpm and ~3000 -- I have logs of these. chippeduk, I'd love to take you up on your offer and I'd certainly be prepared to pay for your time. I know it'll be sorted out, I paid 10500 for the car -- 98, 57k saloon so I think the price wasn't unfair. I'll definitely be inviting the dealer to give me some help Monday though... :) Andy |

mine is pushing 358hp but with 2.1bar pressure it gave 230hp so fueling can be an amazing difference in power gains and losses.

Chippeduk Are you able to adjust the fuel pressure electronically (map) or did you get a replacement higher pressure part?

I used an adjustable one as the one on the car was well and trully fekced. I have ordered an original one to replace it with though. |

I see, so what pressure should the standard one maintain the fuel rail at? Is lack of fuel pressure a common trait with the M3?

I had mine measured at the pistonheads RR day on Saturday at Surrey Rolling Road in Camberley. They got 236 at the wheels, and a calculated 283 at the flywheel, which they reckon is pretty typical for their measurements on EVOs. http://www.collinsclan.co.uk/pages/cars/phrr111204/source/ dsc_0675.html Edited by tw99 |

We had a car club rolling road in the summer and there were a couple of E36 M3's and none of them scored anywhere near the BMW quoted figure. On the day no car got more than 300bhp at the flywheel with the highest score at the wheels of 246bhp by an e34 M5 3.8. The lowest M3 E36 3.0 was 180bhp at the wheels and the rolling road (Power Engineering) found that the throttle cable had streched and so the car was not giving full throttle. They fiddles with this and it was up to around 220bhp at the wheels which was higher than the evo engined cars. Power engineering claimed that they have never seen an e36 M3 and E34 M5 that has been within 20bhp of it's factory figure. However they explained to us that what they look for in a car is a good power and torque curve. Generally the BMW owners felt the rollers were reading low. This made me very chuffed as my car was just 11bhp off the Factory BHP figure and 26Lbs/ft above the factory figures Not bad for a twenty year old with 125k on the clock and bog standard. |
