Has the metal got fatigue through the heat? The change in heat and cooling rate can affect the crystaline properties of the steel (dendritic growth).

for the hard of thinking or those that don't know, this is where the rate of change can alter the properties of the metal, a quick change in temp produces a hard/brittle metal, slow change produces a soft/plyable metal.

Also I think the process in producing the chassis is from extruding, which improves the directional tensile strength. Heat changes this.

The heat could have also have damaged the electrical componants in the bulkhead, amongst other things.

Rhys' structural knowledge comes in useful at last on a BMW forum, knew he'd be good for something one day, hes the only person I know on here that will talk about anything (ususally at length) other than BMW's ... you are a true legend sir, keep it up!

I could now go on a metaphorical rant about how the Thelwall Viaducts supports have had to be replaced, mainly due to the original ones being formed from rubbish grade Italian Steel ..... but you know me, Im not one to go off topic, so I wont.

I wouldnt mind owning a 2000 M3 for two grand, but as said above, I wouldnt want it to suddenly come apart at the seams at 140+ MPH (on the track of course)

...well, what can I say.. That college education on engineering design, and computer aided engineering came in usefull after all.. But don't ever ask me about quadratic equations or women (both baffle me at the best of times and never did get to grips with them at college )

By the way, did the Thelwall viaduct supports become missformed due to the high amount of short fat ponies trotting accross them? Oh, sorry, that was Thellwell..

Nope, was rather short fat Warrington women.

The funny thing was, the company that was originally comissioned to build it declared bancrupcy, so could not be liable to pay for the re-fit, but then THE SAME COMPANY were awarded the contract under another name, as they were thought the best to handle the job seeing as they did it all in the first place. .... Now hows THAT for a SCAM.

And you wondered where your RFL monies were going.

The above is just rumour by the way...not proven fact, but sounds about right, so I choose to believe it.

going to carry this over to the daft thread, as its going a bit off topic

..don't think I'd buy a car that has been fire damaged, my old 316 was flood damaged, it fell to bits.

If the dash is melted it would be a nightmare to redo the electrics.

It must be pretty well burnt for that price. I would have thought the engine and box would be worth more alone!!

I was at a police auction here a good few years back and a relatively new police fiesta (Mk IV) burnt to a crisp was sold for IRŁ750 (was when IRŁ was more than UKŁ)! The plastic in the engine had melted all the way down into the head, etc.

I was taught many years ago, that when attending the scene of a burnt out car to not touch it.

Something about the residues of some plastics, and brakefluid etc.

Best Wishes

Nigel

Yep, quite right Nigel, Hydroflouric acid is produced.. if you get it on your hand, the only treatment is amputaion as it eats straight into the bone. Think its the only acid that eats glass as well, has to be kept in rubber containers I think.

..bit like my mothers gravy...

Bet they also told you never to sit in a stolen-recovered either ....

A hidden, infected hypodermic needle up the back-side is the last thing one needs on a friday afternoon, just before the weekend retreat to the local watering hole.

Think its still a month before they can tell if your HIV infected from such an eventuality, even in this day and age of technological wizadry.
