I assume it depends on driving & braking type, pad make, disk make (solid, grooved or crossdrilled)

Like Killian says, there are loads of variables... did you have a particular reason for asking? ie you had a pair wear out quickly? or last a long time?

As an example the OEM pads on my old Ford Puma lasted 22k miles with mixed driving from bimbling about town to back road blasts.

I don't know about my 328i as I don't know how old they were when I got the car... they've lasted 15k+ miles while I've had the car.

I had a 318is 1994 that the pads wore out quickly on. Can't remember exactly what mileage.

My mechanic said it was because of the ABS. I had been testing it on ice/snow in a car park.

I've had my 318is for a year now and when breaking I can feel a small vibration through the peddel.  I've done about 13K somice I bought the car last year.  Not too sure when the pads were last changed.

The vibration sonds like the ABS kicking in, when your on a dodgy surface.

On my 1994 there was a red light that came on when the pads were ready to be changed. Check out your drivers manual.

I don't really trust those lights though, especially when it comes to brakes.

For a quick check yourself you can turn the wheel all the way left or right and have a look behind at the pad.

There should be about 5mm of wear left on them. If you're not sure get a trustworthy mechanic to have a look.

The sensor for brake pad wear is only on one pad, so it presupposes that there is even pad wear.  Best to put your wheels on full lock (ideally take of your wheels), get down there and have a look at brake pad depth.  It wears quite slowly so if you've got a few millimetres, say 4or 5mm, then no need to worry.

And if you trash pads HARD, then you should still get a good 7,000-8,000 miles out of them.
