Hi everybody,

I`m looking at buying an E30 325i Touring `90 on a G with 160k miles.

This car is local to me & has a LSD, motorsport bodykit & apart from an annoying squeak from the rear (sounds like a squeaky parcel shelf), u/s brake discs, a u/s front wheel bearing, a rusty tailgate, a BMW Recaro for the drivers seat is in quite good nick.

I`m after a bit of advice of what else to look for when buying one of these cars, such as how to check the LSD is working ok & anything else to look for.

The guy is asking for £1300 ono with a MOT & loads of history, is it worth it?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

cheers

Lee

Lee

I'm sorry nobody has helped you, I've only ever had one bm, and thats an E34 5 series so I dont have any particular things for you to look at.

With some of the repair costs you can get with these fine german machines,( the head went on mine), would an AA or RAC inspection be out of the question ?

Best Wishes

Nigel

Annoying squeek from the back could be suspension, bounce the back end up and down and listen(I've got the same problem with mine, and it turned out to be suspension). Front wings rust easily - though wings are cheap at around £20 each from euro car parts. Look at the sills for rust or rot. The drivers seat sounds like its been changed from the origional if its only that one which is a recaro, so maybe the old one was worn and ripped (shows high milage and driving style) Is it manual or auto? If auto, check fluid - it should be cherry red and clear. If not it might mean the gearbox is on its way out (mine cost £450 for a recon box and labour) You might want to get the engine checked out, timing chain wil probably want changing, as will plugs leads and rotor arm/cap. As its a touring do you have any history with respect to what its been loaded with coupled with the milage (back to squeek at the back end).
Big bit of buying advice, have someone else check it out for you that has some expertise as they will have a clear mind when looking. I should have walked away from my first car, a 1985 (B) 316 with 98K on the clock, the car had been in a flood and was covered in mould with sewerage in the boot. It took a lot of work, welding and swearing. I've now gladly got rid of it (just before the clutch went bang).
I hope this will be some use to you, I don't want to appear to put a downer on it, but youv'e got to think this way when buying. You could check autotrader online for similar adverts and compare, you shoud get something decent for £1300.

our touring has this annoying squeek. But it's from the inside, and it's the rear fold down seats in ours. grease them up, move them back and forth, and it cures it for a few months.

I like them, good cars.

Thanks everybody, I thought I was just being ignored!

I`ve since had the car looked at by the garage that has maintained it for a few years & the cam belt, water pump & other belts have been recently changed. It`s had a oil service & 2 new front dampers & top mount.

The Recaro was fitted because the original seat was a bit worn. The squeek at the back does sound like the seats or something around that area.

Rhys- It is a manual

jonb- I`m getting it from Workington in West Cumbria.
