Hi everyone, thought i'd make a post to introduce myself seen as im new
here. I'm 22 and just finished studying civil engineering at the
university of plymouth. I live in down in cornwall!
I've just lost my first car... an opel astra estate... it was my pride and joy! It was ready for a magazine feature and had been lined up for stands at many of 2005's shows... until one night on my way home i came over the crest of a hill to find a tree had collapsed across the road, with nowhere to go and no time to stop, i ploughed straight through it. If it wasn't for the fact it was a left hooker, i'd be dead. A few days after my loss I decided to go and look at some cars, I had my heart set on a Vectra GSi 2.5 V6 estate, but then i saw a bright red bmw 328i coupe... i fell in love. It looked gorgeous and the thought of owning it soon became a reality, about 3 hours after first seeing it i was driving it home! I don't yet have any decent pics of it, just one a friend of mine took... I am unsure whether it had the nikasil work carried out by BMW, but i shall trawl through all the paper work tonight and see whether anything had been done about this. I had the car serviced last night and a new ball joint fitted, it now runs with no problems what so ever... except dodgy window motors that like to come back down when i press and hold the up button... so now i have to tap the button to make them go up...! anyone else had this on there E36? I have lots of plans for the coupe and I'm hoping that should I hit any problems, you boffs can help me out! |

Welcome. Any problems just ask. Don't know about your window problem though, could be the switch that is at fault. |

Welcome to the forum, A couple of things you could try with your windows before you pay a garage to look at them, firstly it is a very common problem. try lubing the runners & guides with silicone spray grease as they some times get sticky & the safety feature of the windoww kicks in as it thinks it is hitting an obstruction like a hand or something! Take of the door cards & grease all the moving parts, then grease up the seals etc. You can call BMW UK on 01344 426565 & give them you vin number, the last two letters & five digits, they will tell you whether or not it has had the nikasil block replaced. Depends on the age too, if it is later than March 98, then you don't have the nikasil, if it is earlier, & fairly high mileage, chances are you won't have any troubles, they would have happened by now. Good luck & happy motoring Edited by ally323 |

The nikasil was used in the liners, pre March 98 on the M52 engine, which is the 323 & the 328. It caused major problems on hundreds of cars, many people have had there liners & or blocks replaced by BMW. There are a lot of good write ups on the www.e36coupe.com site, you can use the search or the FAQ section. I see you have an M3 evo (looks well nice too!) so you should be ok on that score. The windows are an easy fix, although sometimes it may be something else that has caused them to stick, regulators sometimes cause it too. |

My E36 coupe has the same problem with the electric windows. Think I`ll give Ally's idea of using silicone spray grease a try.
