I'm due to pick up my first 318is on Saturday so I thought I'd say hi!

Now, most people do lots of research before buying but I'm buying this one because I read good things and it's really clean albeit with a few miles under its belt.

So can anyone enlighten me a bit more about things to look for? Any flaws with the M42 engine?

Congratulations on your new toy!

Quite important to listen out for any timing chain rattle, might just be a new tensioner required, or worst case new chain & sprockets.

Exhaust manifolds have a tendency to crack around cylinder #1

90% of the 318iS is identical to other E30's so most parts are easily available.

Let us know how you get on when you pick her up

Well I've spent the day traveling the north of England to find a nice E30 but sadly I'm still without one!

Went to Keighley in Yorkshire to view a 318is that was described as great condition, it was a shed that made more noise that a cookoo clock museum at midday! Panel fit was awfull and the alarm was the most important feature, well according to the vendor.

Next stop, Brighouse then Queensbury (320i) then Wigan (318i lux)....Now back home and feeling deflated!

My budget is a grand which is never going to buy the finest example but all I'm after is a reasonable 318is. The quest continues, it looks like there is one in Portsmouth!

This proabably should go in wanted but is you've got a 325i Touring or 318is, please gimme a shout.

Tough luck in your quest for a decent iS. For a grand your going to have to be lucky to find a decent one.

I'm just under a hour away from Portsmouth, if you would like me to view the vehicle before you travel down then feel free to give me a call. Like most people i'm a busy chap, so the more notice the better

I originally had my eye on E30 BMW with intent to buy it, but it went for 」2700 in the end @ auction.

E30 EVO went for 」800 @ auction recently too!

Did try to buy E30 BM (E3 OBM) but that had gone to some other lucky sole, i spent hours trying to decide on what two letters would be best at the end, then OK dawned on me! I just had to have it then! One quick call to the DVLA and it was mine

Thanks for the kind offer Mark. I'm beginning to wonder if I was being a bit picky withyesterdays cars? I looked at one at Friday morning at another dealers, even though I was there at 8.30 to make sure I the best chance of buying it, the dealer said oops it's sold, I forgot to take it off the net! Shame as that one looked really clean with history, the kick in the teeth was that a elderley gentleman bought it as a cheap run around! Bet he picks up his pension in record time

What was wrong with the cars you have seen?

I would say no to rusty cars, and anything that sounds like a tractor. You have hot to expect a few knocks and scrapes on a 14/15 year old car, unless you pay top dollar!

It depends how soon you need to buy one, if you can hang on a bit, some bargains can be found. As you know though, most cars are rarely described correctly by the vendors!

1 owner = hire company / driving school
rust free = free rust!
Good condition = knackered
1 lady owner = hand bag scrapes all over the paint work
Clean interior = Well i had to clean it after the dog was sick in it...

etc
etc

The 318is had an M-Tec spoiler mounted crudely onto the original rear spoiler, that set the scene. The boot was very damp but the thing that worried me was the engine bay. The white paint had 'yellowed' a lot like the engine had got extremely hot. The underside of the bonnet had been resprayed, by the wrong coloured aerosol and all over the soundproofing foam. It was advertised at 」995, but I offered 」800 due to the condition with a view to making it good again. The vendor turned it down but would take 」875.

I though I have a car at the mo, the E30 has to cope with a daily commute and a trip to the Nurburgring.

I'm also toying with an E34 if the right E30 doesn't turn up. Whatever, it has to be righteous wheel drive!

When you say crudely mounted rear spoiler, was it a home made affair? sounds dodgy...

Or did it look like this:- (Sorry, but more pictures of my car )

Piccy shows a MTech II rear spoiler on mine, replaced the original lip spoiler.

The yellowing under the bonnet could have been the original 'wax' BM saw fit to spray under there for protection.

Damp boots are usually caused by dodgy seals on the rear lights, or water running in through the aerial.

Overspray on the underside of the bonnet would definetly put me off, why spray the underside? .. mind boggles

Best of luck in your search.

I think whoever mounted the spoiler was aiming for the result you have achieved. However as the mtec was mounted on the original it was tilting forward quite a lot!

Quick word of warning about Kieghley...don't suppose you spotted this car there did you??

Read the description...

Totally rust free and pristine??!

Also no mention of headgasket failure either!!

Thanks to Gazza on the e30zone for checking this rustbucket out for me!
